“Nice cosy guesthouse located in nature.”
Reviewed August 1, 2013

This guesthouse is a very cosy place in a nice tranquil location in the nature. The mainstreet is 30min away by foot, and the shrines are within 30min. The breakfast is ok. Rooms are nice and silent. The owners are nice and good englishspeakers.

We spent four delightful days in this hotel as home and will stay there again. This small hotel lives up to all its claims. Rooms were well decorated and spacious. Staff was courteous, polite, and helpful. The front desk staff were especially helpful. We loved the ambiance.

We stayed at the Nikko Park Lodge Mountain Side for two nights during our month-long tour of Japan.

We found Nikko Park Lodge Mountain Side to be quite basic, more like a hostel for backpackers.

Our room was adequate but there was no wardrobe, just coathangers on hooks. The bathroom was very small indeed. There was free wifi.

Staff spoke very good English and were helpful – the owner provided lifts to the bus station each morning.

Travel Tip:
There is a lovely, small onsen about five minutes’ walk (500 yen). Enjoy relaxing in the outdoor bath at night, looking up at the stars.
Take the bus from the main square to Chuzenji Lake and Kegon Waterfalls

The lodge was located in the woods area. thus it was quiet and peaceful but will be a distance away from town.

no lifts and our room were located in the 2nd floor, thus we have to lug our heavy luggages up. Nice attic room, connected with own bath and toilet which was convenient.

since we were located far from central nikko area, we inform the owner of breakfast preparation for the next morning. The breakfast was english styled.

when we booked the room from the hostel's site, it is quoted with one price, but when we arrived, we are surprised by +1000 JPY per person.
after explaining it out, the owner agreed to charge with the price shown on their website.
the owner is kind and helpful, but overall but we were a bit uncomfortable with the room-charge conversation.

Definitely no frills here, even though we had probably the largest room at the hotel. The room felt like it was decorated by a college freshman, replete with couch with spring that are 10 years past their prime and other assorted furniture. I'll be frank when saying I wasn't sure of the cleanliness of the sheets and pillow cases - I never found anything to prove they weren't clean, but I just didn't have the best vibes about it. HOWEVER, we weren't planning on spending any time in the hotel - just a place to sleep. The owner was very friendly, which earned them an extra "star", along with the western breakfast (I just can't ate seafood or anything like it for breakfast).

TIPS: 1 - if you long for an American-style breakfast you can get it at this hotel; 2 - there is a trail very near this hotel that will take you a very scenic route down to the river (no need for bread crumbs), BY ALL MEANS TAKE IT - it was only a 10-15 min walk (I'll include pics of it here); 3 - hotel owner informed me Frank Lloyd Wright designed the Nikko Train Station and Albert Einstein once visited it/Nikko (it does have a FLW flavor); 4 - Take a cab to hotel upon arrival, after that you can walk to town and back, not too far if you use trail; 5 - Hotel will shuttle you back to train station when you depart.

Nikko Park Lodge has 2 locations: 1 is right in front of the Tobu station, the other is 5 minutes away, in the park. We stayed at the second for a weekend, taking advantage of the pick up service provided for free (the road was iced, we had to leave our car in Nikko city center, at the hostel parking).

The owner and his wife were nice and friendly. We just talked a while at the check in, and the guy offered to drive us up to the Toshogu Shrine, to let us start sightseeing on time!
We had a delicious dinner (time is fixed and there are only a few choices, but nice) and played the guitar by the chimney then joined other guests and played cards. There's a small onsen 20 mins walkig away in the snow, my boyfriend said it was tiny but confortable. The room was small but with a nice view over the trees and all around was quiet and white.
