I stayed at the Annex Turtle for two nights in November 2009 as part of a 2 week tour of Japan, and it was my favourite place I stayed at! The location is lovely; in a quiet, picturesque corner of Nikko right by the river. The gentle sound of the river at night is really soothing. The rooms are in traditional Japanese style with tatami mat flooring and futons, which I found to be very comfortable.

The staff are very friendly and speak good english. I had the breakfast during my stay which I really liked and thought it was very nicely presented.

The best thing about the Annex Turtle is the onsen!! It's a beautiful large bath with gorgeous views over the river. It's private and you can have 20 minutes per session. Soaking in the hot water with the sliding window open and the cold air on your face is exhilarating, especially after a full day walking and trekking around beautiful Nikko.

If I ever go back to Nikko - and I hope to - I would definitely stay at the Annex Turtle again!

Have stayed at the Turtle Inn six times over the last nine years and have always enjoyed my stay but things seem to be getting better and better. The bathrooms seem to have been renovated and the service was the best it has been this last trip. Staff were friendly and helpful. They arranged taxis for us and recommended vegetarian restaurants in the area. The Inn is in a lovely area - near the World Heritage Sites and just a little out of Nikko town. The private hot spring bath is perfect after a day of sightseeing! Will definitely be back!

Most of the tourists visiting Nikko arrive in the morning and leave in the afternoon ... If this is not your choice, spend at least one night in Annex Hotori-an: for sure you won't be disappointed... You will probably be welcomed by the lady owner who speaks a little English and you will like your room overlooking the river. After a day walking through the temples area, you will enjoy the small but beautifully located onsen ( private use ).
True, this B&B is not in the center of Nikko but only ten minutes walking from the temples in a very quite residential area... The (western style) breakfast is super, with fresh fruit and soft toasted bread, far from the usual "eggs and bacon" type.
All these goodies for a very reasonnable price. Unless you need a 24 hours service, Annex Hotori-An is really a must. The only drawback ? There is no restaurant and you'll have to walk 10 minutes to find something in the neighbourhood.

After reading all the amazing reviews about this hotel/hostel, I decided to go for it. It was the biggest mistake. I was initially planning to stay there 2 nights but because it was so bad, I left after 1 nigh. The room was dirty, not sure if the bed linen was changed before we arrived, the bathroom was tiny, the windows haven't been cleaned for ages. The room was supposed to be 'japanese style' but all we got was tatami on the floor and that was it. This place is definitely not a Ryokan. Everything is falling apart in this place and it looks like it hasn't been refurbished for 50 years! To be honest am not sure how can the hosts dare to price it at this ridiculously high rate. The spa is a joke. It's dirty and old and I wouldn't even wash my feet in it, let alone have a bath. The topping on the cake was when the hosts entered my room without knocking thinking that the room wasn’t occupied. Unbelievable! Furthermore, I don't have anything against the children, but to be honest when I'm n holiday I want to relax but it was impossible to do so since the hosts live upstairs with their children and I could constantly hear them because the walls are so thin. All in all, I hope you read this review before going to Nikko and hope that you will not end up in this place.

Pro:
- nice setting in a quiet and beatiful corner of Nikko
- new house, therefore new furniture and fittings
- small onsen in the basement , next to the river
- the lady at reception (owner?) speaks enough English and can give you some good information
- easy own website, no credit card requested for the reservation

Contra:
- not properly clean (dirt all over all appliances in the bathroom (easily removable with a wipe), poorly cleaned towels, plenty of dust all over the TV, plenty of mould in the batrhrooms)
- when we arrived our room temperature was 12 degree, and I dare anyone to say that this is ok.
- the lady at reception woke us up at 8 am to ask us if we could move to a bigger room. Nice gesture, but if your guest do not reply after repetedly knoking on the door it probably means that they are sleeping.
- the whole hotel and rooms are heated by some gas powered air-heaters (quite difficult to decipher how to make them work), that produce a terrible smell of gas troughout the building

This accomodation is listed as "midrange" on some popular guides, and effectively it has midrange prices (in Tokyo you get 4/5 stars for this price, see my other reviews), but it looked to me more like a budget hotel. The feeling I had was to be in a hostel: comunal facilities like the tea maker, the owning family living upstairs, plus the problems listed above.

I am not sure what to suggest in Nikko, as the whole town seems to cater mostly for Japanese tourist, and I could even forget about the problems I encouted, but for me poor cleaning is a no-go.

Stayed four days at ANNEX TURTLE HOTORI-AN. Great location next to the river; so it's quiet. The hotspring is a lovely treat after a day hiking. The rooms are very traditional - meaning thin walls - so bring earplugs if noise worries you; funnily enough it was the Japanese guests who were noisiest, slopping about the hallways like elephants, slamming the wooden sliding doors and speaking really loudly.

It's quite a walk from the station, especially if you have luggage. The Tobu railway Nikko Pass is really a great deal so think about getting one, especially if you plan to visit Chuzenji or Yumoto onsen during your stay - then you can easily take a bus to get close to the inn. If you get off at the 7-11 convenience store ( opposite the stone church) which is the second stop after the famous red bridge, it's slightly more than 10 minutes walk.

The Turtle Inn-Annex was a simple but pleasant B&B in Nikko, Japan. My husband and I, with friends, spent 2 nights there on a trip to Nikko (as part of a 2+ week vacation). It is located in a quite location and convenient to all the historic sites of Nikko. The staff speaks some English, and they were helpful. The Japanese style rooms, with tatami floors, were adequate in size, simply decorated, but very clean. Breakfast was adequate, although the simplest in quality or quantity of selection that we had in Japan. The Turtle Inn has what they call a "spa"...essentially a small public bath which we used to warm up after the cool days... and, while this was nice to have, it coud use re-decorating to make it much more pleasant. The breakfast room also can be much more pleasant if it were to be re-decorated.
