“Most beautiful shires we have seen in Japan”
Reviewed June 13, 2013

The shrines are located on the mountain slope between the trees. Go early and enjoy the peace and silence, and the magnificent shrines.

“A must see when you stay in Tokyo and have one day free”
Reviewed June 13, 2013

It is a long trip by train to come here (a bit more than 2 hours), the entrance fee is not cheap, but for experiencing some real japanese culture and architecture this is THE place to visit. All the shrines are really beautiful and extremely interesting.
After seeing all the ugly buildings in the Tokyo area (and many some small shrines there) I was really happy to get a glimpse of this work of art at Nikko with all its shrines and nature.

“My Favorite Shrine in Japan”
Reviewed May 27, 2013

Toshogu is a very famous complex of temples and sacred buildings located in Nikko. The tree lined entrance is gorgeous and inviting to the many visitors to the site. I went with my family on a Saturday in May and had no trouble accessing a parking lot. It only takses a couple of hours by car or by rail from Tokyo. The number of buildings may seem overwhelming at first but all of them have different architectural aspects and beautiful woodwork. There are several famous wood carvings that can be seen while walking through the many buildings. Gold leaf and many other intricate carvings are easy on the eyes. The forest setting also makes for an excellent atmostphere and the shade is always appreciated during the heat of the day in Japan. Don't rush. There is always a crowd but that doesn't mean you have to follow them. Step to the side and let people pass by if they don't want to soak up the sites. For an additional fee, visitors can also visit the mausolem of Tokugawa Ieyasu (historians will appreciate this).

Unlike other reviewers, I thought this was very easy to get to. Take the Tobu Nikko line form Asakusa station. Two hours,. Then, you take the free bus to the shrines and temples area. All of the admission fees and round trip train/bus fare is covered in the pass, which is reasonably priced at 3600 yen. I'd say you can do it in a day trip. I stayed over and the town of Nikko itself is not worth it. Not much going on there.
But, the shrine is a must see. Try to visit on a weekday when it isn't as crowded.

“Temple Complex”
Reviewed May 12, 2013

A wonderful site, but many many people. The entrance fee is relatively high and as there is renovation work in progress, you don't really see the first temple and are rushed in and out with hoards of other tourists.
