Yumoto Itaya
Ranked #47 of 150 Hotels / Ryokan in Nikko
Reviewed February 4, 2013

Went Nikko during winter, when I arrived at the bus station of Yumoto, I was surprise to see Yumoto Itaya van for picking us up as the ryokan is only 3 to 5 minutes walk from the bus station. During check-in, the front desk staff, who can speck simple English explain patiently the ryokan’s amenities and confirm when I want to have my dinner and breakfast.
Then, a staff led me to my room and explain (in Japanese) to me the amenities in the room (I think). The room is very spacious and clean but the style is a bit old. The amenities besides the normal one include tea pot, tea leaf and a set of Yukata (something like a kimono, but between a kimono and bath robe). So you can wear it to onsen or even to have dinner or breakfast.
Dinner serve is full course of Japanese meal, very delicious! Same goes to breakfast.
Yumoto Itaya has onsen on the 3rd floor, with indoor and outdoor onsen. Although the onsen is not big, but it is open 24 hours. If you don’t feel comfortable of being naked in front of others, then choose odd hour to go.
This is the only ryokan I stayed in Nikko, but based on my conversation with an old Japanese couple, they said they have tried many ryokan in Nikko, but Yumota Itaya is one of the cheap, good services and have high quality spring water ryokan in Nikko.

I stayed there for one night during winter. A very traditional experience considering the wonderful gastronomy of the place and the very convenient outdoor onsen. The staff was very helpful. Wi-fi worked perfectly.
Be aware that a traditional ryokan has restricted times for dinner and breakfast. It's not a resort in a common sense.
Smoking is permitted indoors, so be aware to smell a little of smoke in the rooms, in the lobby etc.

Room Tip: Asking for non smokers rooms might be a good thing, even thoug I'm not sure they exist...

I stayed at the Yumoto Itaya alone for 1 night in April. I walked there from Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls which took about 4 hours in the snow and freezing temperatures. The many waterfalls and beautiful mountain views on the way made the trek more than worthwhile. On arrival, I was very nervous as I had never travelled in Japan before let alone somewhere so traditional where the staff speak next to no English. 2 girls immediately took my bags and competed to see who could bow the most and they showed me to my room. Here, I was shown where my yukata and sandals were (they had to get larger sizes of everything for me even though I'm only small!!) and also where I could make myself a cup of green tea. The room was extremely basic with straw matting floor (take off your shoes!!!) and a low table in the middle with a legless chair next to it. Then there is a partitioned section next to a large window with normal chair and table with amazing views over the mountains and lake. Here I was happy to sit and read for the next couple of hours absorbing the amazing scenery. At 6pm, someone knocked on my door to tell me the food was ready and what a treat it was. Course after course of traditional Japanese cuisine arrived cooked and presented to perfection. After eating until I couldn't eat any more I left to more bowing and went to experience the hotels hot spring. Sitting amongst the mountains in freezing temperatures all nice and snug in beautiful hot water was an experience I'll never forget and I wish I had done it before dinner to get a longer experience. When I returned to my room a futon had magically appeared for me to sleep on and I had a fantastic nights sleep. Breakfast was more amazing food presented impeccably and I left having thoroughly enjoyed my stay. The staff made up for the fact that we couldn't communicate verbally by giving me perfect service throughout and constant politeness. I couldn't recommend staying here highly enough. An amazing experience.
