If you're not to fussed to skip a few nights of luxury, and you need somewhere to stay in Omiya, I recommend the Super Hotel. By western standards, the rooms are tiny but to be fair, this is generally a business hotel chain for single travellers. We had a room with a double bed with a single bunk over it for two people and it was really tight. There is no where to put luggage except at the end of the bed, meaning you had to walk over it. The rooms with just a double bed seemed more spacious - fine for one person. The bathroom is a capsule type that you have to step up into which is a problem for people with limited mobility. However, all that being said, the room was very clean and serviced daily. Towels, linen and toothbrushes are supplied daily. The alternative to the capsule bathroom is the excellent communal bath just off the foyer. This is traditional japanese style bathing with alternating times for men and women. I used this in preference to the capsule when I could and found I was the only one in there each day. Female guests are invited to take a selection of 4 body products each day to use in the spa which includes shampoos, moisturisers, and the most fantastic feet pads which really help those weary legs after a day touring. These are all complimentry. The Japanese breakfast is included in your room rate and is very good. A wide selection of hot and cold dishes is provided and usually includes salad, scrambled egg or some type of egg dish, a meat dish, rice and miso ofcourse. The drink machines are free during service so you can help yourself to hot and cold beverages (of a limited nature ofcourse). However, you sit at long benches with glass screens dividing you from the other side of the table, which is ok if you're alone, but not good if you're eating as a group. One thing this hotel lacks is a sitting area where you can gather and chat without peering over a glass screen as the rooms are too small for 'gathering'. Even a bench seat outside would be good when the weather is fine. There is internet access and a computer and printer in this area for guests to use. I had my laptop in my room with internet service which was free, so I didn't use the foyer pc. I'm not sure if there is a charge. I don't think so as I saw our children using it a couple of times and don't remember getting a bill. The staff are very nice and a few speak English quite well. A lot better than my Japanese! They are very helpful and polite and helped with directions and called taxi's for us. (Taxi's in Japan are cheap and very clean with good drivers, unlike in Australia sadly. Take the hotel card with you so you can give it to the driver for your return). The hotel is well located just a short walk to Omiya station with Lumine department store (incredible food hall, really incredible) and numerous shops and restaurants. Restaurants and convenience stores abound around the station district and it's a short train trip in to Tokyo. I recommend this hotel highly. All rooms air conditioned.

Room Tip: Aparently not all rooms have clear, opening windows. Ours did and we had a good outlook towards the station. The room was very quiet. We were on the 7th floor.

The Super Hotel is a chain in Japan that is classified as a "business class" hotel. It caters to predominately Japanese men and women traveling on business in Japan. The Super Hotel in Saitama Prefecture is located near Omiya-ku Station (about three blocks) and offers a clean and convenient location for traveling around the Tokyo area. The rooms are very small and the bathrooms are quite tiny. However, if you are planning on spending your time sight-seeing and enjoying the country you'll only need a place to sleep. The staff at the Super Hotel speak very little English but are always quick to offer assistance and are extremely friendly. The Super Hotel also offers a Japanese style breakfast each morning and a wonderful feature is a hot spring public bath that is tremendous for a weary traveler each morning and evening. For about $50 per person the Super Hotel properties throughout Japan are a great bargain and offer an opportunity to spend time with the Japanese people.
