Shin Yokohama Prince Hotel

After several trips to Tokyo w/o visiting this neighborhood city, we finally decided to spend a full day here during our recent trip. We booked this hotel as there's not a lot of cheap choices at the city centre, while this place offers great rates on weekdays except Saturday night. We were not disappointed.

The stay started perfectly as we took the airport shuttle from the Haneda airport that arrives directly to the hotel entrance so basically there's no walking which is a big bonus. Hotel staff greeted us with good English. It was a huge hotel with many floors and rooms. It's aged but clean, definitely a 3 star.

The twin room I stayed should be recently renovated with large HDTV, and is clean and modest in size. Each room should have a good view of the city as it's relatively tall. It has a *huge* (in Japanese hotel standard) bathroom with a long bath tub, which is really surprising. Bed is hard but manageable.

Each room has LAN-only Internet connection, but okay for us as we brought a wireless router.

Although the website stated 0min from JR station / metro station it does require a little walk (get an umbrella in case it rains!). For those who is planning to go to waterfront area, there is a special pass that allows you to take unlimited "city gov't" subway from Shin Yokohama to that area, plus the tourist bus there, making it very convenient and well worth to stay here.

Given the good rate we had (less than 10k yen) I'm very satisfied with this hotel, and would recommend it to everyone.

Room Tip: As usual, if you want quieter rooms, don't stay near elevators as their noise could be heard fro...

The Prince has everything you can think of at your reach. I've stayed there a couple of times, and I highly recommend choosing the "renewal" rooms. The rooms on the lower floors are very dated and not the cleanest looking (although I am sure they aren't actually dirty, just a bit dingy). This last time I stayed on the 30th floor, and the room was clean and comfortable. You can do laundry cheaply (especially if you stop by the 100 yen shop in the building and pick up laundry detergent there, rather than in the laundry room), you can eat in one of many restaurants in the building, or in the strip of restaurants across the street, and you can shop for whatever you need (groceries, clothes, jewelry, shoes, whatever!) in the Prince pepe shopping area attached to it. It's within a few minutes' walk to Shin-yokohama station, giving you quick access to other parts of Japan if you have a JR Pass. All in all, if you get a good rate on the renewal rooms, it's not a bad choice.

Pros-
Service is quite good, staff members took the time to explain everything in a slow and deliberate manner. Located directly next to Shin-Yokohama station. Close to fast food and a dozen eateries as well as the Ramen Museum (about 10 minutes walk). View from the upper floors is amazing! Room is actually large when compared to other business hotels in the city. You can check-out by simply placing your room key in the box located outside of the elevators, saving you from waiting in line.

Cons-
Traffic in and out of the hotel at peak times is unbearable. Check-in times are long.
Though service is good, staff attempted poor and broken English with me but then switched to Japanese when they realized I can speak the language. Poor language skills.
The hotel room floor is peppered with deep carpet stains. Everything is fraying and falling apart. The bed was so old that it was caving in. Try to sleep on one side and you will end up rolling to the center. Also, a plus and a minus is that the Yokohama Arena is located next door to the hotel. If a concert is going on (and it likely is on any given weekend), the train station will become super busy at the time the concert ends. Also, the eateries may be clogged with concert-goers at that time. The airconditioner can be turned off or on but the effect is pretty limited. These rooms really need their own airconditioning units.

There are recently renovated rooms which would make this hotel a much better experience for those staying in them. However, these rooms cost significantly more and seem to often be given to those who have purchased package tours from abroad. At that very least, all rooms need a carpet replacement and a new mattress.
You can book budget business hotels for an even cheaper price with the same or even better quality rooms, Japanese chains like Toyoko Inn, Route Inn, Sotetsu and others could be compared to the quality of the rooms and are much cheaper. The Prince hotel chain is actually a huge letdown but for some reason, they are often considered 4 star hotels. I had nearly an identical experience with Shinagawa Prince Hotel.

OK. I agree, the hotel needs updating. And if your main destination is Yokohama, then the Shin-Yokohama Prince is not the place to stay. By subway - a solid 20 minutes. But in reading reviews here, I see NO MENTION of the single greatest feature of this hotel: The Beer Garden. It's only open in the summer, but they have this HUGE tower of beer that they bring to your table from which you pour/share with others at the table. The staff is great, the food excellent. There is an extra charge for using the swimming pool - it is not included in your room rate. But check it out: http://www.welcome.city.yokohama.jp/eng/travel/trend_reports/2009/07.html

This is a very dated, basic hotel in Shin Yokohama that is only worth staying in if you are working in Shin Yokohama. The hotel is very easy to find from the Shin Yokohama station which is always a bonus in Japan, alternatively you can take a shuttle bus directly to and from Narita Airport from outside the hotel. I found this the easiest as I didn’t have to change trains then.
I was very unhappy with my room are there were a number of stains on the carpet, curtains and bedding (I didn’t expect this in Japan). They happily moved me to a different room though which was much cleaner and had slighly nicer bedding. They explained though that his room wasn't on the "womens floor" , they asked if I was happy to be on a floor with mens rooms, which I was. The doors have locks don't they and I have my own bathroom! The rooms are tiny, I had a twin room and the beds are just too narrow for Europeans. There is also no room for luggage anywhere, and there is only enough space to hang up a couple of items of clothing.
The rooms feel very dated, and the hotel does not seem modern at all. It’s a very big hotel and on the ground floor there are vending machines and a laundry room, and some places to buy Japanese confectionary.
I didn’t find that there was a nice atmosphere in this hotel, like you would normally find in a hotel bar. I think if I am working in Shin Yokohama again, I will stay in Yokohama and take the train to work as there is not much around the hotel aside from the train station.

Easily the worst hotel ive stayed in whilst on business travel in Japan. Rooms are small and dated, but at least clean. The breakfast is a disaster and must be avoided. Staff very helpful in giving city advice, and spoke English. Location is good within the city but the overall hotel experience means i can assure once you have stayed you would not return.

I stayed in this hotel for a week and found the hotel to be best in class as compared to the one around at Yokohama. Amazing experience of having view of mount Fuji. The reasonably priced tiny rooms surprise you for a single occupancy and those rooms are indeed for single occupancy. The hotel staff and service is friendly and up to the mark. The 150 meter high cylindrical shape of hotel gives 360 degree view of Yokohama.

Room Tip: Choose a room facing Fuji san.
