If planning a trip to Tokyo, I really recommend staying in this guest house in Yokohama. It is only 25 minutes to Shibuya from Yokohama station and it will cost you 260 yen only.
The owner makes everyone feel welcome and the place is immaculate. The price is very reasonable. Yokohama is a great place to explore, when needing a break from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo. I also met some fantastic people staying here and I always thought myself fairly shy, sob sob sob.

My girlfriend and I stayed at Kanalian for 9 nights, using Yokohama as both a base from which to access Tokyo and as a destination in itself. The walk from Yokohama station is an easy 5/10 minutes and the place itself feels like a little jewel nestled away between otherwise typically Japanese grey buildings. We're both architects (one of the pulls for Yokohama was its ferry terminal) and the guesthouse is amazingly bespoke and beautifully crafted.

As some other reviews have mentioned, there are a few main plus points to the Kanalian: the cleanliness (it feels safe and clean every day), the quiet (rooms are often empty but the guests who are there are all friendly and quiet), the price (the cheapest accommodation we had in Japan and by far the best), and Lee (the owner and all round top guy for whom nothing is too much bother and a friendly suggestion is always ready to hand - he even drove us 15 mins to get the bullet train without being asked!).

Overall, this is an amazing place for an amazing price. It's a lovely guest house with Japanese crafting and a host who has perfected the balance between friendly conversation and giving guests enough space to do their own thing. It was an absolute pleasure to stay here and we couldn't recommend it more.

Room Tip: They're all good but if travelling as a couple, be sure to ask for a twin private room.

The place is a nice secluded cabin-like place less than a 10 minute walk from Yokohama station. It's pretty new and the craftsmanship on the place is unreal. Lee, the owner, is about the coolest guy ever. The place was immaculately clean. There's a nice kitchen you can use, and he has washer for your clothes (hang drying on the roof!).

Lee (the owner) is what makes this place really stand out. He becomes your best friends as soon as you meet him. He's extremely helpful figuring out the area. He made coffee most mornings and offered me a Fosters on most occasions. On a couple of the slow nights (a typhoon was coming through) we went out drinking and he knew all the best places. You really feel like you're just staying over at a friend's place.

The price was ridiculously cheap - 2500 yen a night! He doesn't have any private rooms, but the place was rarely busy enough to have all the rooms full - so I usually got a 4 person room to myself.

He's got wifi!

Room Tip: Not a bad room in the house.

They are a 5 minute walk from Yokohama Station which made it very easy for the express train from Narita as well as to get around while there. Even then, the owner was concerned my wife could not find it so he took his bike to the station to guide her.

The owner speaks English well. No problem communicating. He was very helpful with maps and directions. He was not sold out so arranged for my wife to be alone in a two person room (she arranged this in advance on the phone). Free internet worked well.

My wife is very very fussy about being clean. She has never raved so positively about a place being so clean before.

I was concerned about my wife traveling alone to Yokohama and found Kanalian here on TripAdvisor. At the price it seemed too good to be true and my wife called them on the phone. She knew right away this was the place to stay.

Special tip for airport travel: JNR has a foreigner-only round trip express ticket. You must buy in the main offices of the two Narita terminals and must show a foreign passport. The price was 5,500 yen and included 2,000 yen of local subway use in that price. It has several metro-Tokyo area stops including Yokohama

Beautifully renovated, clean and quiet house with very nice staff. Large modern kitchen available, and free wireless too! Close to Yokohama station (only 5 minutes walk). Supermarket and restaurants around the corner. Trains to central Toyko only take half an hour, but Yokohama itself is definitely worth a longer visit. I stayed for 4 nights in June 2011 and had a great time. The Kanalian guesthouse is the best option in Yokohama! I hope to come back soon! Thank you!
