“Good choice for the area”
Reviewed December 30, 2013

Stayed here with colleagues during November 2013, hotel well presented and smart for Japanese standards. Guest room very pleasant with a comfy bed and decent mini bar. On site restaurant is French and expensive, nice if you're there on a date I guess but romantic candles not so suited to business discussions. We took a 20 minute walk into town where there are a number of different restaurants, including a decent Korean BBQ. Small on site spa has a hot bath which was OK. Only complaint was that the bar in reception closed at 9pm and not just stopped serving but kicked you out and took your glasses, on the first night we turned up at 8:50pm for a beer but they refused to serve us because 10 minutes was not long enough for us to finish our drinks, very strange situation........

Cold and uninviting building on the outside. The lobby shocks one with discolored spotty carpets. Prices are a rip-off – ordered a sandwich and a very small glass of OJ in the lobby bar and was charged over 2,000 yen – more than the price of a full breakfast.

There are so many hotels and ryokans in Hakone it is hard to know where to book. Luckily we passed on my first suggestion and made a reservation for two days at the Hakone Highland Hotel. There are so many different packages offered the choice can be a bit confusing so my husband telephoned the hotel directly. Depending on the week day the prices vary dramatically so if you can stay during the week rather than a Saturday it is much cheaper. We chose a standard twin with dinner and breakfast and bought a Hakone Free Pass separately. The hotel as the name suggests is up in the highland area away from the lake, about 30 minutes by bus from Hakone Yumoto Station, all included in the Free Pass. The hotel has an elegant but modern reception and is a low rise building set on a slope over three floors with cottages also available in the garden where you can stay with your pet. The rooms are very comfortable and have an internet connection but you need to bring your own cable and wifi router as the hotel will charge you for the loan. The hot spring baths are very great, not very big but there are indoor and outdoor baths, a jacuzzi and a steam room. And it is genuine hot spring water. But saving the best for last is the restaurant La Foret. Dinner is a silver service French style tasting menu of six courses which change with the seasons. The food is superb, very delicate in taste and beautifully served by attentive staff on wonderful china ware. The wine menu looks very comprehensive too. And the coffee is very good for a Japanese restaurant. And this is included in the price of the room. Breakfast is served at your table, not a buffet, and you can choose between American style or French/Japanese. A separate restaurant offers Japanese style breakfast which must be booked in advance the night before. And the drinking water is fresh from the mountain and is absolutely delicious. Bring a bottle to fill ip to take on your walks.

Access to the hotel is easy by either bus or train from Shinjuku, about two hours in total. There are lots of nice walks to do nearby and in the hotel's large gardens plus the hotel is in walking distance to many of the local art galleries and museums. Hakone is a beautiful area to visit within easy reach of Tokyo, just hope for fine weather if you want to see Mt Fuji.
