“Magnificent journey”
Reviewed August 3, 2012

An incredible journey up and over the mountain. The best way is to buy a Tozan "free" pass. It is not free, but allows you to go on and off the railway, a cable car (or funicular), a ropeway as they call it (really a gondola), a large boat made to look like a pirate ship and their buses. In my opinion, a bargain for what you get. The railway switchbacks up the mountain for spectacular views and the gondola crests over a peak in the mountain to reveal a sulfur mine. A treat at the peak is to purchase eggs boiled in the sulfur water, which turns the shells black. Supposed to bring good luck. They were delicious. A fantastic journey.

“Only so-so...”
Reviewed July 10, 2012

My experience from taking this train and the bus that it's just OK. In mid June there were no Hydrengias still and the train was really crowded (all the time I took it 4 times in an attempt to enjoy it) and very slow. Overall, not a must from my perspective.

“Seriously?”
Reviewed July 3, 2012

I just don't get it. You're standing because you're the only person on the train who is neither a senior nor a child and it's packed; it's really slow; it goes through the trees so you see nothing; and it's just a regular train but older (and not in a cool historic way). Skip it.

That was cool way to zigzag up a mountainside on a train!

This part of the Hakone Free Pass which is the best way to go.
