Hakone's great for for many things: onsen (natural spa bath), traditional Japanese inn, cable car, stinky eggs, and more. It's not very good at a quick, or even a slow meal, as most travellers will eat a set course at their hotel or inn. I've been to Hakone five or six times and found myself stuck in many occasions with the few restaurants on the main strip serving average soba, or the 7-11. Today we struck upon a gem: about 6-7 mins walk from Hakone Yumoto station (cross the bridge in the station, go past 7-12, turn left, cross river and it's first after river on right.) The sign says Shikajaya next to the Japanese- you just have to watch out for it. You can get the English menu. This is really well thought out- each course I'd laid out with a numbered key. If you speak/ understand Japanese, this is great and you can order without having to wade through the Japanese. If you don't, look at the key which describes each meal. The meal was fab- I opted for the house special, as did my Japanese friend, and we both loved it. Gorgeous dishes & flavours, great service and a really lovely atmosphere- very well worth the visit.
