The agents who helped me book my room, made an error and the Ryokan management informed 2 weeks later asking for 30,000 Yen to give me what I had emailed them about originally. Note to international travelers - this place is poorly managed and overly priced.

Room tip: waste of money and bad customer service

We stayed for 2 nights at the Ryokan with our 2 daughters on our trip around Japan. On arrival staff were extremely friendly and helpful but for our children it was a cultural shock with the traditional style Japanese room, etiquete for the baths and having a room attendant to cater for our requirements.

The room on arrival was extremely clean and it had a private hot bath. For a western family our recommendation would be to have a room with a private hot bath and ask for a private bath in one of the communal baths on arrival so you can experience some of the facilities.

On the food front the food was fantastic with 8 courses served for the evening meal which was overwhelming for our children as they struggled with some of the dishes, the Japanese breakfast also consisted of several elements and we could not eat it all. For the following day we asked for the western option breakfast which catered for their needs. Overall we had a lot of food so make sure you are hungry.
Upon check out, we asked for our bag to be sent on to another hotel, due to an error by the tour company they gave us an incorrect address. The perseverance of the staff to sort it out and find the correct hotel was exceptional, and they confirmed by email that it had all been resolved.
Great experience but I would avoid taking teenage girls especially if they are picky with food!

Overall great Ryokan but would have been easier without the children.

Room tip: For western guests have a room with a hot bath

As many reviewers have already indicated, this is an awesome place. Great facilities, but get a room with a private outdoor tub if you can. Hospitality is top notch. Cheryl was one of the people who took care of us and she was awesome.

My daughter and I stayed here for one night in July. We had a great experience. We were greeted at the door by our personal attendant for the duration of our stay and given a tour of the property and our room. We were able to reserve one of the public onsen for our private use and it was so relaxing. We also had a private onsen in our room which allowed us to soak anytime. The food was excellent and plentiful! Would not hesitate to return to this wonderful establishment.

We stayed here for one night during our trip and it was a fantastic Ryokan experience. From the moment we arrived the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful and we could not have wished for anything more from them. When we checked in one of the staff members took the time to help us plan our sightseeing in Hakone, in order for us to get the full experience during our short 2 day stay. He was very helpful, writing everything down on a map with bus routes and timings to ensure that we would be back in time for our evening meal. He even provided us with printed out Google map images to show us where to catch the bus!

The food during our stay was delicious and beautifully presented. We stayed in the Nadeshiko room which was very clean and spacious. We had one large room which functioned as a living/dining area and then also became the sleeping area at night when the futons were laid out. We then had a separate seating area that led onto a balcony. To access our private onsen you walked through the bathroom which was modern and nicely designed. Then private onsen was beautiful and felt secluded and quiet, with bamboo all around the decking area so that you did not feel exposed.

After our evening meal we had a time slot for private access to the larger public onsen. This again was very beautiful and seemed even more magical at night when illuminated by lamps. The communal areas were very calm and quiet.

A special mention must go to our room attendants Mikoto and Yuya who made our stay even more memorable. Mikoto was very friendly and spoke very good English. When serving the food she made an effort to explain each element of the dish and describe its flavour. They were very attentive and were always seeking to ensure that we were comfortable and happy with everything. During our stay we actually got engaged, and Mikoto’s reaction was perfect. She gave us a complimentary bottle of champagne and a personalised card with a lovely handwritten message that I will keep to remember our night. All of the other staff members congratulated us the next day and gathered in the reception area to say goodbye and wish us well.

Overall this was a perfect stay. The place is beautiful, but I think the staff and their exceptional service is what really makes this place special.
