It is a great park next to Senba lake. It is best known for it's plum blossoms around March, just before cherry blossom season. There are events all year round such as new year's and summer fireworks. I live near this park and it is a great pleasure to have close by.
Please note that it is not a nature park with camping, hiking trails, etc but man made with walking paths. You can get there by either walking from Mito station or taking the bus if you don't want to walk that much.
As stated in other reviews it is one of 3 important parks in Japan and boasts a long history. The view from the old residence (can't remember the name but it is in the middle of the park) really helps you get a feel for what it must have been like so long ago. The house entrance costs money but otherwise the park is free.
