“Good all year round.”
Reviewed November 25, 2013

It is a great park next to Senba lake. It is best known for it's plum blossoms around March, just before cherry blossom season. There are events all year round such as new year's and summer fireworks. I live near this park and it is a great pleasure to have close by.
Please note that it is not a nature park with camping, hiking trails, etc but man made with walking paths. You can get there by either walking from Mito station or taking the bus if you don't want to walk that much.
As stated in other reviews it is one of 3 important parks in Japan and boasts a long history. The view from the old residence (can't remember the name but it is in the middle of the park) really helps you get a feel for what it must have been like so long ago. The house entrance costs money but otherwise the park is free.

“Cool and pleasant”
Reviewed November 16, 2013

A cool and pleasant place to visit. we walked from Mito station to Kairakuen parn along side senba lake connecting canal. It was amazing and stunning nature walk. Can see lot of birds and different verity of fishes in the lake. We visited this park in August, unseasonal for the plum blossom, but still it was simply superb. I stayed near this park for one month. Idle place for the jogging in the morning and evening but they closes the park after 6PM.

“Beautiful!! Must visit.”
Reviewed October 5, 2013 via mobile

We went at mid summer, not in season for its famous plum blossom. The place was still gorgous. Beautiful landscape. My phone really failed at capturing the park's beauty.

What a great stroll!! Even the path leading to the park was great. I highly recommend that you walk there instead of taking the bus from the mito station (30min walk). The path next to the senba lake was very serene; walk next to swans and various other birds.

Take a table cloth and some snacks with you to turn this visit into a scenic picnic.

“one of the great parks”
Reviewed July 12, 2013

The Kairakuen park belongs to the 3 great and important parks in Japan and should be visited when ever you can. Best season is spring or autumn. June and july , the rainy season are not ideal, since it is very hot and most flowers do not bloom.

It is worth to invest in the expensive fees for visiting the palace with its uniques styling, history and view.

“Simply Beautiful”
Reviewed May 6, 2013

We spent a couple hours here and the whole grounds were wonderful. The plum trees had already bloomed out but the azaleas were still in bloom. Those were some of the largest azaleas I had ever seen. It is worth the 190 yen to visit the Kobuntei, the restored home of Nariaki Tokugawa. Kairakuen Park is a great way to spend an afternoon while in Mito.
