“Good location, but average hotel”
Reviewed September 30, 2013

We were for one night at the Mercure Hotel in Narita, as we had an early flight the next day to Rome. The hotel is next to the main train station and the Kensei station in Narita. So a great location when you arrive by train.
We had a free upgrade as platinum Accorclub members. And wow if this was an upgrade, then I don't want to see the normal rooms. The room was clean, but quite old. And there was a funny smell everywhere in the hotel, and it was even worse in the elevator. They even had to put some of these room perfumes things in the elevator, but this wasn't helping at all. After two elevator trips we arrived then in our room in the annexe building. The room was clean, but also quite small for an upgraded room, and the room was really noisy, the aircon and fridge made loud noises during the night, and the aircon was switched off. The room was ok, for one night it was really fine, and I think most people also come for only one night as this is an airport hotel. They do offer a shuttle, but well if you have to be at the airport before 7 o'clock, you have to take the Kensei line or taxi, because the first shuttle only leaves the hotel around 7 a.m, and well even if you have time to use the shuttle, the NEX or Kensei line is faster, as the bus takes 30 minutes to get to the airport, and the train only 10 minutes.
I was in a few Mercure Hotels this year, and to be honest this was ther worst one for this year. The price was ok, but Accor should maybe renovate this place. I think next time I would stay at an other in Narita. But if you're on a budget, it is really ok to stay in the hotel.

Staying for business reasons this was my first return visit this year. The hotel's location is its greatest asset, it is just across from the mainline stations, with easy access to the centre of Tokyo.
Free airport buses are available. Unlike most other hotels close to Narita Airport, this hotel does offer the benefit of being able to be within walking distance of the beautiful Narita Temple and gardens area. Closer to the hotel are numerous shops and restaurants, the town has a friendly small town feel. As for the hotel itself, average is probably the best description, it's rooms are dated, and have seen better days, there does appear to be an odd musty smell on the 8th floor corridor and in the room. The bed is very comfortable, the bathroom quirky with its step up and in. The toilet/bidet being very local and intriguing to figure out how it works. Free wifi make up for the lack of English speaking tv, I found only BBC World. There are bars and restaurants, but appeared rather sole less compared to the better options outside the hotel.

Room Tip: There is currently extensive building work opposite the front of the hotel adjacent to Narita Statio...

I've been staying three times this year, on different seasons in this cozy hotel. Traveling alone, I booked only single room. Clean and practical, now they even give me the additional pillow I always need, without me asking them. In the bathroom, high class shampoos, conditioner and face foams are provided. The toilet flush is automatic and "Japanese style". Try it out, it's funny. Even the sleeping dress you can leave home, it's provided , folded on your bed! The only thing I was missing, was a safety locker in the room, but since Japanese room maids are very honest, I just kept my valuables in the luggage. There is a locker machine in the lobby, I didn't figure out how to use it... Another thing I miss, is more English TV channels, but I have free wifi in room to compensate this. The free shuttle bus to the airport is provided, except that day it was snowing all night, when I had to take the nearby train to get there... All in all, this hotel is worth the money. The swimming pool is at extra charge. I'll be happy to stay there again on my next visit to Naritasan Park and it's Turtles. Really worth the visit!

Room Tip: Ask to stay in the main building, high floors, facing north, as the annex is far to walk and there...

We arrived at this hotel for one night to be close to the airport for an early flight. We arrived from Tokyo and took the train to the airport in order to use the hotel transport from the airport to the hotel. We quickly found that the service is infrequent and, as we had just missed a bus, had to wait almost an hour and a half for the next one. The hotel is in the centre of Narita and looks ok from the outside and the foyer. When we went up our room it was a different story We exited the lift on the 7th floor to be greeted by a peculiar and rather unpleasant smell whcih remained the whole time we were there. The room was small, the carpet grubby, I didn't even want to walk barefoot on it. The furnishings were dated and the whole place just had a grubby, unclean feel about it. If we had been staying for more than one night, we would have found somewhere else. No food or drink allowed in the room! However, there was a fridge so why have a fridge if no food or drink was allowed!
We decided to eat in one of the restaurants in the hotel as we didn't want to be searching for a restaurant in the town. We had a drink in the bar, all other patrons were smoking. Then we went to what was described as the European style restaurant. It was empty and we could see no evidence of food. We were told by the staff that there was a buffet but we didn't see anything so left again. It was as if the staff didn't want anybody to eat there. We went upstairs to the Chinese restaurant, again empty, but at least we were able to order some food. It was ok, but not the meal we had wanted for our last night in Japan. Only on leaving there did we see that there appeared to be a pleasant Japanese style restaurant just across from the Chinese one. Too late!
I found the bedroom very stuffy and warm during the night despite having the air conditioning turned up. Our last morning, we had to take the bus to the airport at 7am as there wasn't another one til 8.30am. We were up at 5.30 to have a shower and have breakfast. No hot water for the shower, we had cold showers and went down to what actually turned out to be quite a good breakfast, if only we had had time to eat it properly. Breakfast begins at 6.15 and we had to have checked out and be outside with our luggage before 7am to get on the bus. Not a lot of time to eat. When we checked out, we weren't asked if everything had been satisfactory, the first time we weren't asked that question on our entire trip to Japan. I wouldn't stay here again. The whole place needs to be redecorated and cleaned with some new furnishings. I was surprised as I have come to associate Mercure with being a step up from Ibis but this couldn't even compare with an Ibis. Very disappointing.

Room Tip: Don't go here

The hotel is in the centre of Narita and is handy for getting around the local area . The rooms are very dated and not the cleanest. Staff are all very friendly and are happy to assist with any questions you may have.

This hotel is ideally located in the centre of town. Has shops, restaurants and perfect transportation links within walking distance. The staff are very courteous as you would expect in Japan. Beds are comfortable but the bathrooms are very small. The tv is useless with only the awful BBC World as the solo English offering. They have DVD players in each room though. Nice hotel to base yourself in for excursions into Tokyo or if you have a layover day.

On first impression the lobby area is large with comfortable couches, a cosy bar and sizeable coffee shop/restaurant, "Seychelles". Rooms are compact, with extremely luxurious beds, a modular bathroom, and 'hit and miss' airconditioning( due to power restrictions following the tsunami) . Double glazing keeps out road, construction and railway noise, and these windows can be opened if required.
A choice of Japanese restaurant,in the basement, a limited menu by the pool, or the excellent buffet restaurant 'Seychelles'. Fairly standard breakfast but the lunch buffet is outstanding value! So popular it attracts local diners, and is always busy.
A hotel shuttle to/from Narita Airport is offered by the hotel, making it an ideal stopover or transit day use. NRT village is a mere 50 metres away, with many excellent restaurants, cafes, tea houses, and bars. The famous temple is also a short walk through town.
Good value for money, great service, excellent restaurants and ideal location.

Room Tip: Rooms in the Tower are slightly larger than those in the 'annex'
