Mercure Hotel Narita
Ranked #12 of 30 Hotels / Ryokan in Narita
Reviewed January 13, 2013

Mercure is a clean and affordable hotel just an easy walk from the Keisei Narita Station. There is also a regular free shuttle to the airport. Our room was large and comfortable and the service was very good. Lots of nice restaurants nearby to choose from, mostly Japanese izakaya style, but there are also restaurants within the hotel. Would gladly stay here again.

The hotel is well located between both Train companies' stations. There is a McDonalds nearby as well as other restaurants. A bus station is also nearby which can bring you to the nearby Aeon mall.

The hotel is split into 2 annexes which is linked only at 3rd floor from the main building, which means if you're staying at the 5th of the other annex, you'll have to switch lifts. The other annex is attached to a small shopping arcade reachable directly from the lifts of the other annex.

In general the rooms are small by international standards but are bigger than in downtown Tokyo. However, it is almost a 2-hour ride into Tokyo main station via the Narita Express which runs hourly.

Staff are very accommodating as are all japanese hospitality, rooms are squeaky clean and comfortable beds.

In a nut shell, if you like to stay near Narita Airport, this is a good choice. But the daily trip down to Tokyo is time consuming and a hassle. The choice to stay in Narita should only be if you do not wish to spend a bomb in downtown Tokyo hotels.

Room Tip: Request for rooms in the main building to prevent changing lifts.

If you can't stay in Tokyo or you just want to stay closer to the airport this hotel is a very good option. The staff is extremely friendly (just like almost everyone else in Japan) and helpful (most of them speak english). It's just around the train station and close to a few restaurants and convenience stores. The room is nice and clean but the bathroom is pretty small. The breakfast has both oriental and occidental food options so you can try a little bit of everything. And if you get a chance go visit the Naritasan temple, it's awesome.

I'd recommend it for a short-term stay.

Very convenient to the station, pleasant staff, sufficient facilities. The gym costs extra but it's well stocked with machines and free weights. The restaurant looked okay but there are plenty of izakaya around Narita Station in which you can each much more cheaply and authentically. Decor's a bit tired - has a feel of the lost 1980s boom. Its real advantage is its location: Narita town is a much better alternative to the soul-less airport hotels: the road down to the temple is great and the temple is top-drawer. For airport access, there's a shuttle bus but it's only every 90 minutes outside of peak times, so you're better off taking the train, the station for which is about 50metres walk around the corner. It's only one stop from Narita Airport Terminal 2 and two stops from Terminal 1.

There are many hotels close by to Narita airport, and many of these are bigger and newer than Mercure Narita Hotel, but after flying to and through Japan many times, Mercure has become my first choice. Its biggest asset is its location. While many of its competitors are isolated in rural Narita, accessible only by a shuttle bus, the Mercure is right in the heart of a vibrant township. Mercure does have its own shuttle to and from the airport, but you can also take the JR or Keisei line trains, and the proximity of both stations means that if you have a full day layover you can easily travel into Tokyo. (Take a limited express to save time.) But a journey into Tokyo isn't really necessary, because Mercure is close to a number of wonderful neighbourhood restaurants and pubs, and Aeon shopping mall is just a ten minute bus ride away.

The hotel itself has the usual Japanese style, compact rooms, but they are comfortable and impeccably maintained. The facilities, however, are where the hotel really shines. It has the best gym I have ever encountered in a Japanese hotel, including all the up-to-date exercise machines you could want, and a squash court! At 1000 yen per session, it is remarkably cheap. (I encountered a hotel in Hiroshima that charged 4000 yen per gym session.) The bar is warm and friendly, with an expert bartender making delicious cocktails, and again, the prices are reasonable. Finally, the hotel buffet is comparable with restaurants in four and five star hotels in Tokyo, at a fraction of the cost.

To sum up, if you have an overnight or one day stopover at Narita and you want a reasonably priced, comfortable, hotel, and you also want to experience a genuine Japanese neighbourhood, then you should definitely consider Mercure. Finally, if you have a group, Mercure have fantastic group rates and make sure that the group's every need is attended to.

Room Tip: Rooms in the annex are closer to the gym, but the views are better in the main tower.

We stayed for two nights at the Mercure Narita and found it very convenient. Short distance from the airport and short walking distance to local restaurants. Rooms were clean and comfortable (not extravagant) and the staff was friendly and helpful. Highly recommend.

I stayed here when I was in transit and found it convenient as it wasn't too far from the airport. The courtesy airport shuttle only runs every half an hour or so in the evening so we had a bit of a wait when we arrived. The check in was smooth and easy with helpful staff. Make sure you buy a breakfast voucher on check in as it is cheaper than paying when you dine. The rooms were comfortable with everything you need. The wifi was free and very easy to access. Room service was good quality and quick, it was available 24 hrs so was perfect for a late arrival. On the whole a very nice hotel and the 11 am check out was good. The reception staff are happy to look after luggage during the day too. Good hotel located in a nice area. Will stay again.
