Even though it's only a short stretch of the Otaru historic district the canal area was a quaint and interesting walk through Japanese history.

We heard so much about this site that we took a one day trip from Sapporo to Otaru City in Dec 2012. From the Otaru Station, a 10 minute walk will take you directly to the Canal. But we took a bit longer cos we visited the Music Box Museum first.

When we reached the place, we were disappointed, not caused by the place but mainly because we went at the wrong time. It was in winter and it was not during one of its well known festivals. Moreover, it was not dark yet so the gas lights which lined the bank were not lit up yet to give the romantic atmosphere the Canal is well-known for. All we saw was a place covered with white snow and there was only a small number of tourists walking around.

To make up for our disappointment, our guide gave us a very informative commentary about the place regarding its importance as a waterway commercial hub in the old days to its present transformation as one of the most visited tourists spots in this city. Hats off to the Japanese for carrying out this project so successfully.

Anyway we took the opportunity to snap some photos of the old warehouses on our right and the snow-covered walkway on the left bank. Hopefully, we will come again at a better time to witness the romantic and enchanting ambience this historical site has to offer.

I love the scene there but the weather is too cold -5 degree celcius. We visited the glass house and bought some gift. Shopping is great too.

It's worth a trip to take almost 1-hour train from Chitose to Otaru. It's a pleasant trip by JR or Rapid train. Otaru station is well-kept and preserved traditional style reflecting through many elements and objects. A walk to Otaru canal is nice and there are attractive points along the route. Old buildings and warehouses along the canal driving you turn back time to the past.
