“Great location, pleasant service”
Reviewed September 23, 2009

Good business hotel right next to the main the train station. The room was clean and quiet and the bed very comfortable. We checked in early and, although the room wasn't ready, we were able to leave our bags at reception. When we returned later that day we found that the bags had been taken to our room - a nice touch.

We stayed at the Loisir Hotel in Hakodate from 19 to 22 December 2008. This hotel was known as the Harbour View Hakodate in its previous incarnation. It was renamed in June 2008 after a change in management.

First the good points. The hotel is right in front of you the moment you get out of Hakodate JR Station. Also right on its doorsteps is the Hakodate Morning Market where fresh seafood arrives by the truck loads every morning to supply its numerous restaurants. A short two minute walk away is a streetcar station to connect you to the town's attractions. If you are leaving or arriving via Hakodate Airport, the boarding/alighting point for the airport bus is also right in front of the hotel. The hotel is about 1km from Kanemori Warehouse with its many restaurants and shops which can be reached via a 15 minute stroll.

Our room had a very good view of Hakodate Harbour, which was a stroke of luck as there were nightly Christmas fireworks over the harbour when we were in town. The room was small but clean and with all the usual amenities with the exception of a safe. The LCD TV had a multitude of Japanese channels but no English ones. There is a free internet terminal in the lobby though it was constantly being used whenever we were there.

The main complaint we have about this hotel is its ventilation. Even though it was snowing and below freezing outside, the room was unbearably hot and stuffy. The air conditioner had settings of 'Low', 'Medium' and 'High' - all of which caused the duct to blow out really hot air. We tried to open the window to let in some cold air, but were not able to as the window refused to stay open and would slam itself shut the moment you take your hands off it. We resorted to jamming the window open with a plastic container. Had to live with the howling sounds of the wind coming into our room but temperatures became much more tolerable.

Hakodate is a quiet town and we're not likely to go back anytime soon. However, should we be there again, we'd most likely choose another hotel.

  • Liked — Convenient location.
  • Disliked — Bad ventilation.

The Loisir Hotel Hakodate is a stone's throw away from the Hakodate train station, about a two (2) minute walk across the adjacent street. The hotel’s staff was accommodating though communicating our requests was difficult at times due to the staff’s limited proficiency in the English language and my limited proficiency in the Japanese language. All in all, we managed to check in and get a clean and comfortable room at this hotel.
1) Location is very close to the Hakodate Train Station.
2) Staff members have a good attitude though it seemed like they had limited work experience.
3) The Japanese restaurant in the hotel, “KIRARI” is excellent but is quite pricy.
4) Location is close to the Asa-Ichi morning market.

1) No restaurant (s) for the budget-minded traveler. As an option, those budget minded travelers may consider eating at the train station.
2) Staff has a limited knowledge of the English language.
3) Hotel room was a bit small.

Stayed May 2008

This hotel is ok. Nothing very good, nothing very bad. Some of the staff speaks English.

The location is nice, close to the fish-market and railway station. If going to Hakodate I recommend to buy a day-ticket to the tram. There is only two trams and you can hop on/off. Great to see the outskirts of Hakodate!

Also, if going in springtime, take a walk in the Goryokaku park!

Our second time in Hakodate, this time stayed 4 nights in this hotel. Situated literally across the road from the station and very central although Hakodate tourist area is not particulalry large. Room and bathroom very small and rather cramped although very clean and well serviced. Staff were fine but very limited English. Booked through Japanese Tourist Service at Y11000 room pn exc breakfast which they wanted Y1700pp for the full buffet but recall they only asked Y600 if booked at the time of reservation. Ate breakfast once which was adequate and filling (mix of western and Japanese). Other restaurants not used but well situated bar on top floor. Lighter breakfast alternatives nearby and at station. Plenty of seafood restuarants on the doorstep at all prices as well as fishmarket and the re-done dock/wharehouse area. All very colourful over Christmas. Room overlooked market and harbour (ask for a higher room) but no noise although room in winter was too hot and needed to keep window open. Lots of other hotels in town but unless a Japanese speaker rather difficult to locate many options on the web! May have tried if I could.
