Review of Goryokaku Park

Goryokaku Park
Ranked #4 of 180 things to do in Hakodate

We were stronglynrecommendedto go to the park but honestly I would not recommend it. Maybe because it's Summer it was very hot and humid - not something you want to do walking around. I was all wet bythe time I got to the tower which was another great disappointment it cost ¥820 to get up just to see the green patches of the the park with history all in Japanese and none in English. Unlike the Hanging Garden in Osaka which offers a very unique and pleasant experience getting up the Sky Building. This has nothing except for the city view which is not impressive. I get better view from my hotel which is free.

Absolutely loved and enjoyed my stroll around this huge park with 1,000 cherry blossom trees around the moat.

It is an old port established in the time of samurais. Inside the complex is a star shaped moat to protect the inner city which houses the magistrate's office and quarters. Though the season we went is not the best, it still is something not so usual for Japan. It is very unique structural design. I recommend visitors to check this around May for cherry blossoms.

Cherry blossoms were magnificent. Saw showers of pink petals everywhere. There is a pavillion to purchase Hakodate products.
