“Lakeside Space”
Reviewed July 2, 2014

A well run lakeside hotel which caters to a mixed clientele of older Japanese tourists and overseas Asian tour groups. To call this "Kushiro" is rather misleading. Lake Akan is one hour's drive from Kushiro and up in the national park. We were given a Tatami room, which was quite huge and included an arm chaired alcove overlooking the lake. Very nicely decorated and laid out, with plenty of storage space and a good sized bathroom. Mealtimes need careful timing to avoid the foreign tourist rush to the buffet (a mixture of well presented Japanese and Western food); so evening meal early and breakfast later, and the coin laundry (three machines only) also needs careful timing. There is wifi throughout the hotel. A good base to explore Akan.

Had a room with street view. Hotel location is near convenient stores (nearest is Lawson). If you would like to shop for souvenirs, you can easily walk out to the nearby streets full of such stores (about 10mins walk). If not, you can ask the shuttle bus service from the hotel and take a ride from the hotel to the tribal village and slowly stroll back to the hotel by spending time passing by the souvenirs stores along the streets..

Hotel provides windbreaker and warm outer wear clothing if weather turned bad unexpectedly. Do ask them if you need one.

Room is spacious and there a plenty of room for walkway after placing 2 huge luggage on the floor. However, we have difficulties in locating electrical points. Seems that the electrical points are all hidden up and located at inconvenient parts of the room. The room has a ironing board which is preset for ironing at 15mins or 30mins and it will auto switch off after that. Tried using it to iron my T-shirt thou the board design is best to use for ironing pants.

For tatami set up, you need not to call for the staff as they will come by your room to help with the set up during dinner time. Another point to note is the tatami mat used in the room does not seems to be genuine japanese tatami mat. The thickness of the tatami mattress does provides great comfort to foreigner who is not used to tatami (unlike other hotel).

Love the buffet spread. They served wide variety of food which includes various sashimi, steam crab, BBQ crab, steak and many many other desserts and drinks. This hotel is popular with the tourist (in tour group from Taiwan & China). The hotel restaurant provides a magnificent view of the lake Akan. You can enjoy the scenery and the food at the same time.

Free WiFi is available in the lobby. If you stay at the lower floor where your room overlooked at the lobby area, you are able to access WiFi inside your room.

Negative points about the bathroom:
The bathroom is tiny and has a urine stench smell (room no is either 280 or 282) no matter how many times I have sprayed it with the refresher. It seems that the toilet bowl may be leaking as there is water mark on the floor after you flush it.

Also, there is NO hot water dispense out from the shower head! It will end up dispensing cold water (*at the point, the temperature outside was just 3 deg) no matter how you try to turn the tap. There is absolutely no way for you to shower with the shower head. I ended up using the tap & bathtub to bathe.

Room Tip: - Ask for lower floor to have WiFi access in your room - Ask for fusion Japanese room style as the...

A beautiful decorated hotel and an attractive entrance with a convenient store and restaurant on the ground floor. We got our cleaned tatami room and most hotels in Hokkaido have onsen. In our room, we were given few yukata in our wardrobe. They were blue and matching in color good for photography. We really enjoyed our stay here. During winter, the scenery were all white outside and frozen lakes with colorful tents where people fished in lake Akan. The food here were fantastic good. They have many varieties and the best is the green tea chocolate fountain. It was so delicious that I can't stop eating. The snow crabs were cook just right, juicy and sweet and delicious. Basically, the food here are all delicious. Everything here was so good. We have fire works during dinner and wi-fi availability is good too. It has a huge onsen in this hotel but the decoration in the onsen does not look so attractive as others that I have been. Overall this hotel is in a good location and a good place to stay.

Room Tip: get a tatami room facing lake akan.

We really enjoyed our one night stay in a tatami room with a view overlooking the frozen Lake Akan and Mount Oakan. The temperature was subzero outside and the room was nice and warm, thanks to the central heating.
We had dinner and breakfast at the hotel - buffet where the restaurant was unable to cope with the huge crowd. There were probably 5 busloads of tourists there. Despite the cards on the table saying that the table was occupied, someone always had to sit at the table to occupy it and prevent others from hijacking our table. Because of the huge crowd, the staff were slow to refill the food too.
At night, there were fireworks, visible from our room.

A very nice hotel in the serene Lake Akan to enjoy the splendid view of this legendary lake and Mount Oakan. I like the hotel lobby interior which has dazzling stars lighting up on the high ceilings and glass elevators.

The hotel has a fantastically huge Onsen (Japanese hot spring spa) on the 9 Floor that you can enjoy the awesome view of the lake while you are soaking in the hot spring baths. Buffet dinner at the Restaurant Felice on the ground level is a culinary experience...there's so wide a variety of Japanese and Western cuisine. I had a great time feasting on the yummy Hokkaido crabs and Japanese beef steaks.

The room we stayed in is Japanese styled Tatami bedroom i.e. you sleep on a mattress laid on the Tatami mat. The mattresses are laid out only in the evening, so you can still enjoy your cup of tea on the square utility table in the center of the room sitting on the Tatami flow ala Japanese style... the Housekeeping here seem to notice when you leave your room in the evening for dinner, because the centre piece furniture and seat cushions are removed and your bed mattresses is nicely laid out on the Tatami mat when you returned. It is customary to remove your outdoor shoes before you step into the Tatami room as you enter the room foyer...you are allowed to move within the hotel interior with slippers provided in the room.

We took the opportunity to enjoy the sunrise over Lake Akan with a lovely stroll along the shores of the lake just before dawn. There is a nice walking track from the hotel along the shores to one of the boat piers about 15 minutes walking distance away from the hotel grounds. You can watch a beautiful sun rise coming across Mount Oakan in the back ground of the lake.

Near to the hotel is Ainu Kotan, a small Ainu village, it's actually souvenir shops selling Ainu handicrafts and food made by the natives. You can watch the Ainu tribe perform their traditional dance (Onnechise) at the Akanko Ainu Theatre too.

Overall, we had a very enjoyable stay at this resort hotel.

Room Tip: Request for a room facing the lake to enjoy the awesome view.

Very old hotel which has not been renovated since it was built in the sixties or seventies, and which is grossly overpriced for what it offers. When I visited, the aircon could not be switched on during the day, only during the night. The windows had not mosquito screen, with predictable results. No internet connection in rooms, wired or wifi. The expensive dining options are limited to a buffet, which may or may not be to your liking.

My friends and I went to Akan for the snow festival. The New Akan hotel is just next to the Akan lake and they have an entrance for stepping out to the lake directly, so it is very convenient for those who would like to go to the snow festival in Akan (there’s firework at night). Originally, we reserved only rooms from the Crystal building as it was cheaper, but the hotel upgraded us for free to stay in the Shangri-la building which was much newer and we were happy. The hotel is huge and the room is big and nice. I got a room of the street view, it is quite nice because of the snow scenery. I guess it would be nice to have a lake-view especially in summer. There’s a “Lawson” (convenient store) nearby and most of the shops and restaurants are in walking distance (Well, actually most hotels in Akan are located in the main street, so no big difference in terms of location).
Our room rate includes hot spring, breakfast buffet and also dinner buffet. The hot spring there is highly recommended as it got a very nice view. The usage of each hot spring is interchanged daily for male and female, so you must be able to get a chance to enjoy the view there. The buffet was also very good, a variety of choices are available. Only disappointment about the dinner buffet is that not many sashimi are provided. The hotel also offered free shuttles to some other districts and it helped us save a lot of money and we really appreciated that. In order to use the free shuttle, you will need to do reservation in advance. The time table can be found in their home page. The hotel also provided free wifi, but the reception is not too good in the room which should be improved. Overall, it is a very pleasant stay.
PS: If you would like to try some snow activities like banana-boat, snow-bike, etc, it would be good to get the ticket pass at the hotel as it was cheaper. We bought one at 2500 yen which included 3 snow activities, hot spring in other hotels, 300yen coupon to shopped in most of the shops in the main street and also snow-skiing for 4 hours (but we did not try as we did not have time).
