“Beautiful Onsen”
Reviewed August 11, 2013 via mobile

The hotel/ ryokan is located on a hill, the onsen over looking the lake. Beautiful amazing view. Try to ask for a room overlooking the lake. My room face the car park which can be a little noisy when visitor get in/out of their car. Room is small but comfortable. Sleep on the floor tatami style. Room has a sink n a toilet but no shower facilities. To shower, you need to go to the onsen. Onsen is separated by gender. I am uncomfortable getting naked in a public onsen so I pay a little extra to book a private onsen for one hour. Private onsen is beautiful with an indoor and outdoor onsen overlooking the lake.
Dinner was extravagant with so many items that I stopped counting. Good Japanese cooking & fresh sashimi.
Breakfast is buffet style with a good selection of japanese condiments, omelet, porridge, rice, miso soup & bread.
Overall a nice relaxing style.

The best thing about the hotel was its hot spring and location. The quality of the water is very good, and the outdoor bath are both overlooking the lake. One of the 2 outdoor bath is only one meter away from the lake. The hotel is situated between the forest and lake with no other building around. When the season is right it should offer nice walking option around. The ryokan also offer free shuttle from Sapporo station or airport, which are 1.5/2 hours way. It is convenient as there is no station near by.

The view from the room facing the like was very nice. It was quiet large, but slightly old. It could be refurbished.

The dinner served in the room was quiet nice with a lot of dishes, we could hardly finish our meal. We choose to have an upgrade plan for the dinner, so not sure if the basic one is as nice. Breakfast was more simple as it was a buffet. But the freshly baked bread and japanese omelette very tasty.

The only point which was not in par with most ryokan we have stayed was the service. It was rather impersonal : Upon arrival guest are given the key and not guided to the room. When the lady in charge of us came later she did not poor tea to us. Later that day we wanted to book a massage but the staff was not helpful to fix the right time not conflicting with dinner time. Also would have appreciated a breakfast served at the table or in the room.

But on the other hand the price is reasonable so not much to complain about.
Overall we have really enjoyed our stay

Room Tip: For 2000 yens more per person the lake view rooms are worth it, they offer great view. The so called...

Positive: very nice dinner, foreigners are seldom sleeping there so the place is truly Japanese. The onsen is very clean, the water is good and the outdoor spa is truly an outstanding experience, especially at autumn. After Marukoma onsen the other spas in Japanese towns are mere imitations. The room is all right, alltogether the ryokan is not new, but they keep it clean. We had a couple of bugs in the room but since the place is in the middle of a forest, this is normal at this season.
The place is really in the middle of nature, beautiful views from the lake-side rooms.
Difficult points: We booked a package for Marukoma. Booking is not easy since their website is only in Japanese. Google translation helps but you are better of with a Japanese colleague helping you as in our case.
Getting there from Chitose Airport or Sapporo is not trivial. The ryokan has complimentary bus service once a day or you can use the Chuo bus service from Chitose running every 2 hours.
If you do not have a car, then you will not be able to see much since the ryokan itself is far from the lake Shikotsu village.
They speak only little English. Front desk was not very much helpful, but restaurant and cleaning staff were very very kind.
Expect to adjust and be flexible to Japanese customs. If you want to feel a bit how Japanese relax then this place is for you. If you want a Western type of service then do not go to Marukoma. We payed 18000 yens per person for one night, a truly outstanding dinner and for a buffet style good breakfast.
