“Good value traditional Japanese hotel”
Reviewed July 17, 2012

I stayed here on an overnight business trip with business associates. It is a traditional Japanese Onsen (hot springs) hotel, with traditional tatami rooms, where bedding is kept in the cupboard and brought out by the staff and laid on the floor for you whilst you are having dinner. Rooms were large, all had direct ocean views and balconies, in room safe, shower and toilet. There was no bath but it is expected that guests use the hotels hot springs for this purpose.

The free to use hot spring baths were on the 7th floor, with separate baths for ladies and men. There are change rooms with large pigeon holes for your belongings. Japan is a very honest country so there is no need to worry about theft. The Japanese all get in the hot springs totally naked, so if you are not shy this is the way to go. Otherwise you can go in your bathing suit. It is customary to wash your body from head to toe before you get in the hot spring baths so don't forget to do this. This hotel has open air rooftop baths with stunning views of the ocean, something not to be missed.

Dinner and breakfast were included, with the dinner being a traditional Japanese Kaiseki menu consisting of about 10 small courses of a mixture of local seafoods, vegetable dishes and desert. Breakfast was a substantial hot & cold buffet offering both western and Japanese selections.

The hotel has a shuttle service from the Atami Train Station, but it is walking distance if you don't mind a few slopes. If you want a Japanese hot springs hotel experience this is a good little hotel with very reasonable prices.

Overall Atami is a pretty seaside town that was very popular about 20 years ago, it has a small grey sandy beach directly in front of the main township, but most of the coastline is rocky. It is 40 minutes on the bullet train from Tokyo and a lovely little town for an overnight trip.

It was our third stay in this hotel. The KKR hotel is somewhat dated, like many similar facilities that were built during the Japanese bubble economy. Satisfaction depends on the rate you pay, but overall you will get a relatively spacious and clean Japanese or western style room with a great view of the sea and Hatsushima islands. One of the most important factors determining the rating of such hotels is the Japanese Onsen and its natural hot spring water, and KKR does quite well in this regard. The indoor, and outdoor onsen are clean, not too small and pleasant with a great view. The breakfast buffer had nothing extraordinary but it was quite adequate. Free parking was available on site, but another advantage of the hotel is its walking distance proximity to JR Atami station which can be accessed by Shinkansen bullet trains within 45 minutes from Tokyo. The dinner course was quite nice, but it ultimately depends on the price you pay. We arranged with the local fishermen for a fishing trip in the sea, and the front desk provided useful information about that. Overall, the facility is a good 3 star hotel.

Was in another traditional ryokan the day before KKR, so KKR pales in comparison. Only advantage is the fantastic sea view. We booked the package including 2 meals. Dinner was a lot of food - they even include a small pot of sukiyaki. But the abalone & lobster sashima was a small portion. Abalone was a little too hard too.
The room we booked were tatami style, again, as comparison, wasn't as big, & has no bath, only shower. But it seems quite new & clean.
Hotel has public onsen, but it's not available for private bookings, unlike some other hotels.
Hotel willingly picks us up from another hotel the night before, & provides transport in the morning to Atami train station.
KKR is more a hotel than a ryokan, even though it has both Western & Japanese rooms. If you're looking for good sea view, this is a good hotel. But if you want to try a traditional ryokan, there are many out there that offers better choices.
