Went with a tour group advertising for traditional ryokan experience. Hated it, far from "traditional" and as we entered before or tour guide we were told we're couldn't stay even when pointing to booking list. Rooms hadn't been renovated since the 70s and smelt like stale cigarettes. Buffet meal was suspect for European and japanese style alike. Nothing made us feel welcome in the least.
