I contributed a favorable comment on “Ichii-Tei” of Hakone in March this year. This, “Yumeya”, is another excellent “Ryokan” located very close to Niiga City that I found worth recommending to like-minded lovers of hot spring and gourmet. It is within an easy access from Tokyo and one could go there only for a couple of days trip either by “Joetsu Shinkansen” or by car along “Kanetsu” and “Hokuriku” motor ways. The village named “Iwamuro-Onsen” where this exists could be reached by either car from “Sanjo-Tsubame” exit of Hokuriku motor way in a half hour or taxi from either Niigata St. in an hour or Iwamuro Onsen St. in 7 minutes. Japan Sea is not far from here but the village is nicely hidden by small mountains including Mt.Yahiko. A very quiet little village is this.
When I reached “Yumeya” translated as a house of dream and stopped my car right in front of a classic Japanese gate through which one should walk through a little garden and across a bridge over a little stream to reach the entrance, a young woman dressed in “Kimono” came out of the gate and uttered a word of welcome. She must have acknowledged our arrival by hearing the noise of our car. She carried all our luggage by both hands and guided me and my wife to the entrance. After a cup of green tea and a sweet we were guided to our room named “Sawarabi”(young bracken) It had a large matted room attached with a couple of small rooms with chairs and a table all looking out nicely to a garden with green trees through big glass doors creating a tranquil and comfortable setting. Two large bath rooms for common use by guests allocated to men and women respectively in turn for evening and morning are quite relaxing. A private bath room also attached to our room. Walking barefooted in the house rather than in slippers in case of many other Ryokans was very refreshing and clean. Because, in other Ryokans, after bath I always lost my slippers as others had worn away and hated to wear those worn before by somebody else. Here I found nobody in the bath nor on the corridors and felt very much at home.
Dinner served in our room requires a lot of explanation but was overall excellent if not best in our long year experience. I should try to highlight the details with photographs separately. (Unfortunately the order of listing photographs was distorted against my will!) There is hardly clear distinction between Japanese and western cuisine if both pursue best and highest level of quality. So wines could go quite well with the meals here too and Yumeya provides quite extensive and good wine list along a range of selected sake and other beverage. And good for us they provided a list of half bottles as well like in many cases of good hotels in UK. White wine should generally go well with the dishes here and I selected a half bottle of Chablis Reserve De Vaudon Joseph Drouhin 2009 which went quite well with most of the meals. In Ryokan sitting on the floor for a low-legged table could cause pains particularly for the Westerners who are not used to it. But here they provide very comfortable low-legged chairs.
After dinner we were shown by a maid, walking in wooden sandals, to a stream in the woods nearby to see a lot of firefly flying down from top of trees to water and up again. It was quite enjoyable and refreshing.
