Family-run hotel with Japanese style rooms located 15 mins easy walk from JR Matsumoto station. Walking distance to shopping and the Matsumoto Castle.

This is the best hotel I stayed in Japan although the price I paid is much less than other hotels. My room is brand new, very big and clean (Please see my pictures). Wifi is fast and good for using skype. The common toilets are kept spotlessly clean at all times during my 2 nights stay here.

Mr Matsukaza and his lovely family went all out to ensure that my stay is comfortable which I appreciate very much. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wishes to experience Japanese hospitality at its best!

The people are very friendly, and although they dont speak much English I had no problems communicating. I had a big room and the heating was sufficient for the cold weather. The only draw back was that I had to use a cable in the reception area for internet connection, but i didnt need it for long so it wasnt too much of a problem. I found it quite central and for me it wasnt too far from anywhere. Its about 2km to the castle which was nothing while wandering through the streets.

Stayed here for 2 nights in August 2013 while travelling around central Japan. Location is a little tricky to find at first but we managed to find it with a rough map on hand. It is about a 15-min walk (with luggage) from JR Matsumoto Station. At night, it was a little too dark to walk back from the station and we took a cab back on both days and it only costed 700 yen from Matsumoto station.

This is a family-run ryokan and no English is spoken but it was fine as I could converse in simple japanese. Room is a tatami one and we sleep on futon on the floor. Futon is soft and comfortable and the air-conditioner is great in the midst of Japan's summer. All is nice except that there is only 1 bathroom and some waiting is required if the bathroom happens to be occupied. Highly recommended for budget travellers! :)

I enjoyed staying - had two nights there. Only Ryokan stayed in so far, so can't compare to others...however, owners were very friendly (limited English) and we felt comfortable. Hot tea was left in our room when we arrived and the following day after we'd been out, which was appreciated. During day the room is in floor-cushion and table format; sometime during the afternoon the staff put out floor mattresses (slept well!). Flooring and wall panels are traditional in style (although not paper wall throughout!). The place has several rooms but is quiet. As is I believe typical, there are shared bathroom and toilet facilities but the latter were never in short supply and kept very clean. Shower room and very pleasant after-shower hot-tub was available from late afternoon and into the morning. Quiet area, location is 10 mins or so walk from train station (not too hard to find but must take a map!). For the town/city centre and castle itself, head back mainly in the direction of the train station.

Found by chance searchin for a triple room in Matsumoto for one night (21st august) we decided to try a Ryokan to experience the true japanese hospitality. Price was ok, and the location is also good: 10 mins walking from city JR - station, 25 mins walking from the most important attracion in the city, Matsumoso Castle (is situated just on the other side of the city, that indeed is not so big). There's a river just in front of the ryokan, that gives amenity to the place.
Room was very nice: 3 tatami and 3 futon on the floor (in typical Japanese style), rice-paper-windows on three sides made the room very "breathing" and bright. TV, air and free wireless Internet made it also more modern.
No private bathroom in the room; toilets and bath / restroom are separated (also in typical Japanese style). I really liked it as first "onsen" experience.
Staff was very friendly but ... completely NO ENGLISH ! :)

I think is a good accomodation to test Japanese Ryokans !

Matsukaze is located about 1 km south of JR station, in a very quiet district, unfortunately on the opposite side from Matsumoto-jo, 2 km away.
Accomodations are japanese-style (no bed, but a big futon), rooms very small but perfectly clean, with free japanese tea.
Staff speaks only a very basic english, thus I was unable to understand how to connect to wifi.
I'd recommend Matsukaze to budget travellers who want to try a ryokan at a very affordable price.
