Amazing, actually difficult to explain with words. The perfect example of Japanese hospitality, housing, service, onsen and gastronomy. We paid 450€ for one night including breakfast, dinner and sake.
Founded in year 717¡ How about that?

I think this come a bit late as I stayed at Hoshi in on 7 Feb 2011, which is one of the best stay in the cold winter. An old driver picked up my sis and I at Kago Onsen Station to Houshi, which is about 20 mins away. When we arrived at the ryokan, we were immediately ushered in a big hall and sat on the tatami floor. We are served with a cup of Macha and a Japanese confectionary.
A front desk manager (I presume) speaks to us in PERFECT English. We walked around in our socks on the tatami floor. We stay at Autumn’s block and our room is Hanano. The room is huge for the two of us. We have a nice balcony overlooking the garden. I love this little corner with a sunken floor and a kotatsu, which is a low, wooden table frame covered by a heavy blanket, upon which a table top sits. Underneath is a heat source, often built into the table itself. This is especially useful during winter time to keep warm.
The front desk manager brought us on a tour to the VIP room which is a stand-alone house. It used to host the Japan royal family. (It can be booked now for a charge.) The vintage furnishing is a feast to the eyes as time stands still here.
The onsen is awesome and so were our dinner and breakfast there. The service is excellent.
I would strongly recommend a night stay here.
