Owner description: This beautiful park contains one of the top three celebrated gardens in Japan. The name Kenrokuen literally translates to “garden combining six”, referring to the six attributes all gardens should have: seclusion, antiquity, spaciousness, human ingenuity, water and scenic views.

“Enchanting garden to view Cherry Blossom”
Reviewed June 1, 2013

We arrived in Kanazawa from Takayama in the afternoon and during check in at the hotel was advised to go straight to the gardens as it was opened for Cherry Blossom festival - the gardens were opened to public, free of charge, until 2100.
So, we went on a JR bus from Kanazawa station and went straight to the park. Needless to say, the gardens were amazing with the flowers.
It was even more special as it was opened to the public for free, so we saw so many people, school kids, work colleagues, family, friends just enjoying the gardens. Everybody had their cameras out for the cherry blossom.
As we only arrived there in the afternoon, we managed to experience sunset in the gardens, and also evening time when all the lights were lit - it was simply magical !
Outside of the gardens were food stalls and also restaurants. It was a very authentic experience indeed.
We then took the JR bus back to Kanazawa station. The JR bus is included in your JR pass but somehow only a few people know about this, even the tourist center at Kanazawa station didn't know about this. It is difficult to find timetable and any information about the JR bus in Kanazawa - we were only lucky because we asked two ladies who we recognised went with us to the gardens in the afternoon (and were luckily going on the same bus back).
A definite must see during cherry blossom season !

“Beautiful garden”
Reviewed May 29, 2013

Enjoyed the wide variety of Japanese maples and the water features. Like everywhere we went in Japan, the garden and the walkways, etc. are immaculate with no litter. We were very impressed with the workmanship involved in propping up all the heavy branches so meticulously. Nice just wandering around and a bonus to see ladies in beautiful kimonos going into the tea room.

“Beautiful Garden!”
Reviewed May 26, 2013 via mobile

Don't miss this garden when you are in Kanazawa. Visited the garden when cherry blossom was over and the garden was still beautiful. An hour is probably sufficient to cover the garden provided its not packed. Probably best to come during the peak of any season although likely to be crowded.

“Yes, a must see”
Reviewed May 19, 2013 via mobile

We came late afternoon on the day of our arrival and it seemed to be a good time for a Saturday. Eventhough there were many people around you could still find quiet spots.

“Worth it in Winter?”
Reviewed May 18, 2013

Visited in March and not so much to see. Still busy though. A pleasant experience, and we could park our Kanazawa bikes close-by
