Shima is one of the old geisha residences in Japan. It is well preserved and worth a visit. The residence gives you a real picture of what it was like living in Japan 100+ years ago.

do not missed the ticket+tea when u buy the entrance ticket, which include a Japanese tea + sweet dessert with the entrance ticket. The staff will explain the history of the chaya in Japanese, walk around & enjoy the calm atmosphere in the chaya then go down to the tea corner downstairs where they serve u traditional japanese tea + sweets (if u purchase the coupon during ur entrance), sitting in front of the garden enjoying the tea & snacks is jus wonderful

Visiting the Shima house really made my visit to the Higashichaya district. It's beautifully preserved - both the rooms and architectural details, and the artifacts - shamisens, hair combs etc. I could imagine a crowded evening with the house filled with clients and geishas performing. It really brought alive for me the history of the district, in a way that I would have missed if I had just seen the outsides of the buildings.

BTW, I did also enjoy the very un-geisha-like knitted woolly socks provided for visitors to wear - mine were striped :)

This was the only geisha house where we could see the interior. As such, it was interesting. Well preserved.

Very well kept place that used to be a Geisha house. Lovely to see all of the artifacts and the original room set up.
