“Fabulously kept Geisha district: a must see”
Reviewed February 1, 2014

Having read probably every geisha biography there is, this was an absolute highlight of my Japan trip. Visiting the ochaya and being able to take pictures made me so happy. I felt like a little kid again. The district is very well kept and nicely renovated. The facades of the houses in all different shades of wood work and colour make great photo subjects. At the bottom of the houses are nice stores. Shopping in japan is so much fun, because they let you look at things without hasseling you to buy something. It was a treat to have been there and I know one day I'll go back.

“Lovely old houses”
Reviewed January 29, 2014

We got the Loop bus to stop 6 and walked a few metres to the old geisha area. It's 2 or 3 lanes of lovely wooden houses, now mostly housing souvenir shops and places to eat. Nearby is a popular gold leaf shop which is a great place to get your Mum a gift!

2 or 3 of the geisha teahouses are open to visitors. Shima is popular but we went in Korokai just opposite. The ticket office staff were off having lunch and we were welcomed by a charmingly sweet modern day geiko. The rooms are very beautiful and photos are permitted. Highlights include the chirping and creaking floors designed to alert staff to customers, the stunning gold tearoom, the red lacquer staircase and the beautifully calm dining room.

“Step back in time”
Reviewed January 26, 2014 via mobile

This is one of two original geisha districts left in Japan. It's lovely to stroll down. Has a beautiful old world feel. Well worth a look. While there check out the gold store. It has a 24carat gold room.

“Quaint old houses”
Reviewed December 29, 2013

There are a few streets of houses in the old town. It was a nice stroll amongst the shops that sell interesting ware-sake, wine, crystals, tea, noodles etc.
There are also restaurants and a small playground where the public toilets are located.

“Walk around in the evening, too”
Reviewed December 28, 2013

Loads of tourist during the day. In the evening, you can enjoy the light coming through the Koshi screen doors and windows and its distinctive atmosphere. Be warned that not many shops are open after 6PM so the area becomes for night photographers and diners. Worth visiting this time of day.
