In pre-modern Kanazawa the many temples formed an outside defensive perimeter to protect the main castle and were in times of war used as military installations.
This particular temple is full of secret passages, trap doors, hidden rooms, concealed stairways and is absolutely fascinating to tour. The tour is conducted in Japanese and you must stay with the tour group, no wandering off by yourself, but the demonstration of the various aspects of this combination place of worship and military installation make for a most interesting couple of hours. Reservations may be needed as I think there is a limit on the number of people who are allowed to enter at one time.
But not I repeat not handicapped friendly so if you are in a wheel chair do not bother to go.
