“I expected to be disappointed, but most certainly was not”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 14, 2013

In pre-modern Kanazawa the many temples formed an outside defensive perimeter to protect the main castle and were in times of war used as military installations.

This particular temple is full of secret passages, trap doors, hidden rooms, concealed stairways and is absolutely fascinating to tour. The tour is conducted in Japanese and you must stay with the tour group, no wandering off by yourself, but the demonstration of the various aspects of this combination place of worship and military installation make for a most interesting couple of hours. Reservations may be needed as I think there is a limit on the number of people who are allowed to enter at one time.

But not I repeat not handicapped friendly so if you are in a wheel chair do not bother to go.

“Temple ninja - not turtle ninja!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 7, 2013

The visit demystify the secrecies of the Ninjas. Worth the 800 yen entry. Very intricate and high tech even in those days 3-4 hundred years back. Actually, it's a temple not meant for the Ninjas but for the shogun!

“Beyond my expectation!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 6, 2013

I must say if you have a chance to stay in Kanazawa, Ishikawa, you should visit this temple. This temple is called as "Ninjya Temple", but actually it is not related to Ninjya at all. there are many tricks and they were amazing!

Only guided tours are available. Their guides are well trained and their way of speaking was great.( Sorry I don't know English guides are available or not...Please check it before you go).

You can join the tour without advanced booking but I strongly reccommend you to book in advance. Just call them and tell your name. Tel no is +81762410888.

By the way, photography is prohibited inside .

“Ninja's everywhere! (not really)”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 2, 2013

while not actually having anything to do with Ninja's, this is an awesome little fort/temple/house that was built with secret hideouts, trapdoors, death traps. Make sure you take the effort to go on the tour (i think they start at set times during the day).

When arriving at the temple, you have to find the SPeaker box, and press the button explaining you would like to make an english tour reservation. You will then be able to join one of the japanese speaking tours, but they give you a little tour book in english with pictures and rough translation of what is being spoken about.

If you are going to go on the tour in the middle of winter like we did, make sure you wear very warm socks! Yes, you have to take off your shoes for the tour, and its gets very cold.

It was a wet day but this was an interesting visit made all the more enjoyable with the company of a volunteer guide. The timber work was amazing
