“Good value ryokan”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 25, 2012

We stayed for 3 nights at Nakayasu Ryokan. We booked the DB room with a private bathroom. Facilities were clean albeit a little dated (No fancy gadgets for the toilet! We were spolied by the other hotels).

We had the Japanese breakfast which was provided every morning and a nice start to the day. The coffee (unlimited) was surprisingly good! We ordered their dinner for one night and what a feast! Very good value and definitely recommend trying it at least once! Dinner is served in the comfort of your own room which is nice.

Location wise, it's not the most centrally located, but Kanazawa isn't a very big town so it wasn't too much of an issue.

Don't expect it to be a luxurious ryokan because it isn't, but for the price we paid we can't really fault it.

Room Tip: If possible probably go with a room with a private bathroom.

We stayed in Nakayasu Ryokan for 2 nights during our 4-week honeymoon in Japan. We arrived early afternoon and were taken straight to our Japanese-style ensuite room with tatami mats and futons. We were greeted by Masanori Tanaka (the ryokan's English-speaking liaison) who was very charming and keen to help us with whatever advice we needed. We told him that we planned to go to the Samurai House the next day and he arranged with the owner to book our tour and to give us a lift there which we were so surprised about! But of course we appreciated it!

One thing I have to say is that the dinner was EXCEPTIONAL. It is served between 6pm and 8pm and is brought to your room. I cannot begin to describe how amazing it was; typical Japanese local food to die for. There were lots of courses; lots of fresh fish, delicious breaded shrimp/chicken, tempura, stews, soup, seafood. The works. Be warned though, if you're the kind of person who is always going for the "Western" option then maybe you would be slightly out of your comfort zone but I have to say it was incredible and would recommend to everyone to try the Japanese menu. We stayed two nights and were totally blown away by what we were served on both nights. Breakfast is served downstairs near reception and I believe you can have a Western or Japanese option.

We had to leave very early on our check-out day and they arranged for a taxi to pick us up and take us to the airport bus stop. I'm sure had we been leaving later, they would have taken us there themselves but it was super early, too early to have the breakfast even. They gave us a set of lovely chopsticks as a leaving gift which was very nice!

Lovely, authentic, well-located ryokan.

We stayed in a Japanese style room with private bathroom. It was our second ryokan stay - and compared to the first we were probably a little disappointed. Not that we had any major complaints. We had everything we needed in the room, we had internet access, the room and bathroom were clean.

The room was smaller than what we were expecting. While friendly, I wouldn't describe the owners as warm and welcoming. At times we felt like we were intruding - especially when we came back in for an hour or so, to freshen up after a day of exploring before going out for dinner.

We also had the traditional breakfast. Maybe it was because we seemed to be the only ones there (we did go not long after the nuclear disaster) but we felt 'observed' during breakfast... and we were having enough trouble eating smoked fish with chopsticks!

When we checked out, they were happy for us to leave our bags there and collect them later before we headed to the train station.

Definately recommend Kanazawa - particularly with the cherry blossoms. One of the most magical experiences in Japan - so many amazing places to explore, then an amazing festival like atmosphere around the castle and nearby areas at night.

Dear Our Guest,

Thank you very much for staying with us.
We are sorry if we made you uncomfortable during your breakfast time.
We usually serve tea or coffee right after our guests finish the breakfast, so our staff might have paid attention on you.
We are sorry about that.
We are looking forward to serving you again in future.
Sincerely yours,

Nakayasu Ryokan

My wife and me stayed at the ryokan for two nights during our honeymoon. It was our first stay at a ryokan, and we found it amazing and very romantic.

The ryokan is near the center of Kanazawa, and there is a bus stop at about 200 m (circular line that reaches the main landmarks).

We arrived with cold and snow from the outside (Kanazawa can be VERY cold and snowy in winter), and the owners made us feel welcome since the very beginning, helping rinse us and our luggages.
Our room was at the first floor. It was Japanese-style, quite spacious, warm, clean and comfortable, with a private toilet.
Public bathroom (onsen) was small but nice.
We had dinner in our room: both food and service were great. The fixed menu includes many tastings of Japanese food, including sashimi, tempura, crab (since it was crab season).
Breakfast is either Japanese or western, large and tasty.
When we left we received a nice little present from the owners.

Price is comparable to other ryokans.
We would surely stay here again.

Basic Ryokan. We were a bit disappointed overall, especially given the price was quite high for the value we got. Rooms are big, but the bathrooms are tiny and dated. The futons were kind of flat, but we found extras in the cupboard so slept on two each which made it cozy. The location was great but the food was just average Japanese style - nothing I would rave about. I would not recommend this Ryokan. We made the best of it, but it definitely was not worth the high price we paid.

We switched to another hotel for our second night in Kanazawa - to a hotel for half the price with better appointments - a move we were quite happy with.

Overall the stay was very good, with a nice and spacious traditional Japanese en-suite room. The room was comfortable and very quiet.
It was a bit pricey but that's normal for a ryokan. I quite liked the dinner (which is served to your room), but bear in mind that I am used to Japanese food and in this case I think that for some tourists the food could have been a bit too shocking (my wife struggled a little bit more than me). The Japanese breakfast was good, and there also was the option of having a Western-style breakfast.
Another good point was that - unlike other ryokans - the meals were an option, so in that way you could make the rate significantly cheaper. And there are many restaurants nearby.
The location is very centric, so you can walk to most of Kanazawa's tourist attractions.
As a downside, the room and facilities lacked the charm of other traditional ryokans (it was a bit impersonal, similar to some business hotels), and they also looked a bit aged.

I am so glad I found this Ryokan on my journey through Japan. It is located within walking distance of the main site-seeing attractions and bus line. It is clean, comfortable and I found the staff went out of their way to make sure I had what I needed. The part that stands out most to me is the fantastic dinner I had there. It was delicious, filling and had many traditional Japanese dishes. Another plus is that they offered a "western-style" breakfast. This made a big difference. While I love Japanese lunch and dinners, I'm not as adventrusome in the mornings when I wake up. So I loved the western-style option. Definitely would stay there again.
