This is a good place to try staying in a ryokan: English is spoken, there are rooms with western bathrooms, and it's right in the centre of this small town (and therefore within walking distance from everything, including the bus and train stations, which, incidentally, you can get to whilst staying almost completely undercover, thanks to the canopied pavements).

The ryokan staff are very friendly and welcoming - and you get a warm send-off when you leave, too. The building itself is of mixed character: looks suitably traditional from the front, but there's also a rather surprising modern extension to the side. Inside, though, all is traditional enough, and our room was lovely - and even included a couple of chairs which you could screen off so as not to spoil the effect when not in use.

You get to sleep on proper futons, and amazing dinners are brought to your room by very friendly kimono-clad ladies in the evening (our first dinner required four separate trays...). You can request vegetarian meals (also delicious), but do watch out for the occasional piece of ham, or random squid.

It's quite an 'early to bed, early to rise' place: both breakfast and dinner are only served in one-hour slots, in your room. And be warned: if you request an 8am breakfast, they come to dismantle your bed and get the table ready at c 7.30... one of the downsides of ryokan life is that after the bed has gone, it's gone all day, and you have nothing to sneak a lie-down on until bedtime.

There isn't the most amount to do in Takayama, but there are some old streets to wander (and lots of sake on sale), and some temples to explore... it's a calm and peaceful place, worth visiting for a day or so.

Ryokan is located in very good location. Not too far from the Train Station and right next to the center of the town's main attractions. Mrs Tanabe and her staff was both friendly and provided excellent service. She spoke good English and was able to communicate very well with all the foreign guests. Rooms were nice and it was a good first time experience in a Japanese Style Ryokan. Food was excellent...

Mrs. Tanable is so adorable and is a very sweet hostess. She picked us up near the station. Surprisingly her English is pretty decent. We've been to ryokans and this is one of our favorites. The meal was delicious... and beautiful. The rooms were well appointed. But, most of all, we loved the service. Oh yes, the trip on the train from Nagoya to Takayama through the Japanese Alps was breathtaking. Can't be missed!

I stayed at Tanabe ryokan in March 2009 and had a bit of a different experience to others here.

I have stayed at many an excellent ryokan with top service, food and facilities and while Tanabe was fine for a night in Takayama, it certainly was not five star rating.

The owner or okami was just absolutely lovely, went above and beyond and was so helpful I can not fault the service at all, it was excellent. The food was also quite good, but where Tanabe really falls down is the condition of the ryokan. It is quite old, as most ryokans are, but does not seem to have been renovated/maintained as well as you might hope. The rooms are a bit musty and seem quite mildewy/mouldy. Cleanliness did not seem to reach the typical Japanese standard. The onsen also did not seem to be the nicest/cleanest I have used so I did not stay in there for too long. The bathroom also had some weird additions such as the razors someone else mentioned, some of which seemed to have already been used?

I did stay during the off season and on a day when we were the only people in the entire ryokan (It seems to get quite packed during busy seasons) which may have affected our stay. Considering the price of staying at this ryokan though, there are probably better choices in Takayama.

The food was excellent and the owners were very hospitable. They made me feel very welcome and at home. Dinner was fantastic and I enjoyed the seasonal delights Takayama had to offer. To be fair, I speak Japanese so I had no problems communicating with the staff. They do speak a little english though and I've heard they have a lot of foreign guests. I had a great time staying at the Tanabe Ryokan and I would recommend it to anyone who would like to experience staying at a Japanese inn.

It is a charming ryokan with extremely friendly and helpful staff. The rooms are spacious and clean, though old style. Location is excellent, close to food, tourist sites and shops; easy to find from Takayama station. Different meals each night, all of it delicious and free wireless internet access in the lobby. There are private ensuites in the rooms, but hot springs spas (gender-segregated) are also available for a mini 'onsen' experience after a long day of sightseeing. The proprietress was very sweet and did everything to make our trip go smoothly and memorable. Great value and thoroughly enjoyed our stay, will come back :)
