“Our favorite ryokan”
Reviewed July 16, 2008

We stayed at Tanabe for two nights during our three week trip around Japan in 2007. We stayed in a number of ryokans and minshukus during our trip but this became our favorite. It is quite oldfashioned and a little bit worn around the edges but what really makes this place is the staff. The sheer enthusiasm and friendliness of everyone is just wonderful. And the handwritten postcard that waited for us when we returned home was really sweet and made us wish we were back! The location is also perfect with everything within walking distance. The wash rooms were great, the ladies was a huge wooden pool while the gents had a rock pool. Apparently they swap sometimes so that the ladies get the rockpool and the gents the wooden pool. So check the sign on the door first! We also had our own ensuite bathroom but never used it because the downstairs was so nice.
The food in this ryokan is excellent, and include regional specialities such as hida beef and hoba miso. The second evening we went to a shabu shabu restaurant around the corner and had more delicious hida beef. All in all this is a lovely ryokan and we would definitely stay here again.

Stayed there for a night end of May 2008. The location of the ryokan is great, on a main street in Takayama and just 10-15min pleasant walk from the JR takayama train station.

The ryokan is very well-kept and the owner is very nice & friendly, and can speak some English.

I stayed at another ryokan(Sumiyoshi) in takayama just before here but prefer Tanabe for location/food/room condition. The Sumiyoshi stay was nice too but different. in Tanabe, you get a well-kept and simple jap style room but with a attached toilet & small bathroom. You can also lock your room door, which to me, is quite important as i don't feel very safe when I sleep if I can't. (I'm female)

The food is fantastic! the best meal i had during my trip. It was kaiseki style with at least 7-8 dishes, each very nicely presented and taste great. My sis & I were already quite full but still managed to finish most of the food cos they were really good. I'm quite a fussy eater and not new to jap food as I live in Singapore where we can get jap food quite easily but the meal was simply divine!

With this great ryokan experience, I'm probably gonna try staying in a ryokan again when i travel to other parts of japan.

After spying my original booking, which was dull and uninspiring, i traipsed around town checking other hotels. I chose this Ryokan. The staff are cheery and speak ok English (by which i mean the female owner and her daughter). The dinner is served in one's room, which is very relaxing after spending time in the onsen at the ryokan. The price also includes breakfast (as well as the dinner) and there is a choice of Japanese or western breakfast.

The reviewer of 2006 who stated that this ryokan was an "expensive cheat for foreigners" must have been staying at a different place as far as i was concerned. I travel a lot (on business and pleasure) and am (i am embarrassed to say) not always easy to please, but this place was certainly clean and not worn around the edges. It was was decorated with pleasant individual taste.

The ryokan is very close / next to the old town and, although it is on the high street, is quiet and i could not hear the road from my room (and i am a light sleeper).

All in all, a pretty good place to rest one's head in Takayama.

We stayed for two nights at Tanabe Ryokan, and it was a charming experience. The food was traditional and we were greeted by the owner and made to feel very welcome. It is a good location, although on the main road it was not at all noisy.

We stayed at the Tanabe Ryokan in June 2007. It was okay. Nice central location in Takayama. The room was in okay shape -- it seemed a little worn. The "garden" was just some branches in astroturf. Bathroom in our room was serviceable. Meals were okay -- nothing spectacular, but we did get to sample some specialties of the region (hoba miso, beef sashimi, etc.).

When we were there they took reservations for the "family bath" downstairs (it sounded like there was just one Japanese bath). We had a bit of trouble getting into it (the previous reservation hadn't vacated the bath and the owners/managers had to roust him), but once we were in there, it was quite wonderful.

The owners/managers were the nicest couple. Very helpful and attentive. They offered many suggestions for places to eat and see, and even walked us over to a restaurant they recommended.

We ended up in Takayama for a few days to escape the hustle and bustle of Tokyo.

Went to Seiryu Ryokan for the first night, was very very disappointed and luckily we found Tanabe right around the corner the next morning and we immediately moved there.

We found everything tip-top especially the Hida beef menu and the lovely ikebana arrangements.

Ms Akiko was very friendly and sweet and very helpful. She and her team really made our stay very pleasant and it is our most memorable ryokan stay in the whole of Japan.

The best part is a few weeks after arriving home to Malaysia, we got a handwritten postcard from Ms Akiko and suddenly Japan didnt seem so far away.

Highly recommended.

We stayed in the Tanabe Ryokan for one night in June 2006 and it could not have been a nicer experience. Ms. Tanabe greeted us at the door and could not have made us feel more welcome. She took time to show us the high points of the town and she showed us how to experience the Japanese bath, which we had not done yet.

Our room was huge, comfortable and clean. The location terrific. We had stayed in one other ryokan where we were not especially comfortable; the Tanabe Ryokan was so much a better experience. We would like to have had one more day in Takayama. We would definitely go back to the Tanabe Ryokan.
