My husband and I stayed here for two nights. The location was perfect - a 10 minute walk away from the center of town, meaning that it was quiet at night but easy to get around on foot during the day. Also, right behind the ryokan was a series of beautiful buddhist temples. The staff at the ryokan were so helpful with everything. And perhaps most notable were the MEALS - huge breakfast and dinners; I would recommend doing dinner here at least one night, and be sure to skip lunch that afternoon.

This ryokan was delightful to stay at: the cooking was delicious, artistically presented and plentiful, both for breakfast and dinner (they also prepared delicious vegeterian fares for my husband upon request, despite the short notice); there is a very nice bath area; and large, air-con tatami rooms with kimonos provided for you to enjoy the bath before going to dinner for the evening splurge. The ryokan is located just nearby one of the nicest temples of the temple footpath, and a 5-10 mn walk away from the old, picturesque area of Takayama.
Last but not least, our hosts were very nice and helpful, with a good command of English; taking us to the station and always ready to help us. We were able to use their washing machine and dryer for just 300 JPY for a vert full load of clothes.
All in all, a wonderful stay in this charming place; the place to be at Takayama, and which we can only warmly recommend to any travellers.

Can only confirm the other reviews: the food was outstanding good, the service wonderfully friendly and helpful and the rooms nice and clean.
I can add that free bicycle rental is possible which is great fun in Takayama.
If you come to Takayama, you have to stay in this ryokan!

Stayed in a couple of ryokans in Japan and this was the clear standout. Fantastic service and hospitality, the owners were so friendly and did everything they could to make our stay as comfortable as possible. We had a room on the highest floor for 3 adults with a fantastic view of the town. Free tea on arrival and each day when they put away your futon beds.

The location is fantastic - 5 to 10 minute walk to the centre of town or 2-3 minutes on a bike.

We had dinner on two of the three nights we stayed here - some of the best food we had tasted in Japan. Didn't know what we were eating half the time but it didn't matter when it tasted so good. People who want to be as adventurous with their food as possible in Japan will love this place. Also got the breakfast one morning which was also good, but it can be hard to stomach seafood first thing in the morning. While saying that, don't neglect the food in town because there are some amazing experiences to be had.

There's a private shower available for those who don't want to use the public bathhouse. Also they provide bicycle rental for free - the best way to get around Takayama.

The only negative is that the ryokan can be a bit loud in the morning on weekends as many get up to eat breakfast before heading out for the day and the curtains in the room don't block out much of the morning light. Don't expect massive sleep-ins here if you're a light sleeper.

Ok...let me explain. The food is advertised as "made by local mothers" -- while we didn't verify that each of the cooks was in-fact a mother, we can assure you that the food was excellent! The ryokan style accomodation is situated just a few blocks from the old section of town. Its a short taxi ride from the train station ( ~720yen ), or a 20 minute walk with only a couple of short hills. The local street food ( soy sauce glazed grilled tofu, or hida beef skewers ) is fantastic and easy to find. We had some reservations about staying in a ryokan since we have a 7 month old with us. We pictured him drestrorying mats, punching holes in rice paper walls and keeping everyone up at night. Non of these concerns were warranted at this place. The rice paper window shades are out of reach, the mats are more rugged than we thought, and rooms are well insulated from sounds. We were pleasantly surprised by the in-room AC and WIFI as well. The staff is really helpful and pleasant and they really made our trip memorable. I highly recommend this place for families, single, or couple travelers.
