After staying in a traditional ryokan in Kyoto and modern hotel in Tokyo, my wife and I really enjoyed this funky Japanese hotel. The dinner and breakfast (highly recommend including) made up for what the hotel lacked in luxury. It was also fun using the traditional bathing areas, too bad that they were not private as my wife and I had to split up when using them.
The rooms were not the most comfortable but they quickly gave us an extra futon cushion after we requested which made the sleeping more comfortable. They also recently allowed paying with Credit Card (Visa, Mastercard) which was helpful - many places in Takayama only take cash and finding and international ATM in the city is not easy (we had to go to the post office).
We did a day trip to Furukawa and did the bicycle tour their - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
