This ryokan is just lovely: the staff is so extremely friendly and cheerful, in the rooms you feel really away from the world, the baths are very nice and clean and the food is an experience in itself! Would definitely recommend to stay here if you like to try a ryokan in the Japanese Alps! Good combination with the Satoyama Cycling tour in nearby Hida Furakawa (15 min by train).

This place is amazing. It's a lovely traditional ryokan, it's clean and the people who run it couldn't make you feel more welcome. We had a big tatami matt room with a small balcony kind of area overlooking the river. There is a big bathroom downstairs which has a lockable door so you can enjoy them privately and there are toilets upstairs. It's easily the best place we stayed in Japan. The biggest draw is the food - it was amazing. We stayed for 2 nights and one evening we counted 10 different dishes as part of the dinner and they are all wonderful tasting and beautifully presented. This place is truly special and was so enjoyable.

This was easily the best place we stayed during our Japan trip. Food was absolutely first class and an experience in itself. Quality was better than some of the posh restaurants we were taken to. Hosts are warm and welcoming and go out of their way to make your stay as comfortable as possible. Location by the river was completely relaxing. Partner was nervous about using shared bathing facilities but as you can lock the door in the bathroom for private use, there was no problem. It was immaculately clean and we never saw anyone else using it when we wanted to. It was also extremely relaxing to use.
We walked there from the train station as the weather was good and it took about 15-20 mins pulling our suitcases. There is a small sign pointing it's location out from the street.
I left a scarf in a cupboard when leaving and the hostess ran down the road after me to return it - you wouldn't get that in the UK! Outstanding.

Travelling with a friend who had never been to Japan we picked this as our traditional experience.Ryokan was easy to find after walk from station and hosts were warm and welcoming and always cheerful.food was superb, bath appropriately relaxing and hot.View over river from our room was lovely.Convenient for all sights in town.Only worry if you are upstairs watch for step down into washbasins in the dark.

Room Tip: Ask for upstairs room with river view

Take a Taxi from station when you first arrive (not easy to find, otherwise), but once you are there getting around Takayama is really easy. Sumiyoshi Ryokan is quietly brilliant. The hosts are simply the best. Warm, inviting, helpful and generous. Went out of their way to enable WI FI for us. Even helped us dress in the Yakutas provided. Location is brilliant, right on the river, in a quiet street. Our room was large enough for family of four, yet still cosy and 'oriental'. We did not have private facilities, but that did not marr the experience in any way. Onsen is small, private and great to be in. Best of all is the food. Both dinner and breakfast were simply marvellous, with great (but not cloying) service. Takayama itself is a really interesting place, and well worth the trip. We went by rail, and it is a very scenic journey.
