“Lovely ryokan in great location in Takayama”
Reviewed June 29, 2013

This is a gorgeous ryokan with very friendly and helpful staff. There is a kitchen and lounge available for use by guests. The ryokan is close to the train station and is in the centre of Takayama. Within walking distance to everything in Takayama - close to restaurants, shops and lovely walks to see temples and shrines.
The breakfast costs extra but was lovely - lots of Western-style food, yummy and very filling.
Highly recommended place to stay in Takayama.

Room Tip: Japanese-style rooms are comfortable and include own bathroom and toilet.

We had booked our room at the Rickshaw Inn well in advance but were a little disappointed at its size and layout. The typical Japanese room doesn't lend itself well to two clunking great western beds. So we had a look at one of the larger rooms which was vacant. Sakura can sleep 6 but is ideal for space-loving westerners. We did sleep in futons, but these turned out to be plenty comfortable enough. There were two convertible lounges, a table and 4 chairs and oodles of just space. All with lovely character - rush ceilings, beams, dark wooden walls, all completely authentic. Delightful.
Breakfast (included) was plentiful but not exciting. Brought to the common dining room at the agreed time, it consisted of yoghurt, cheese, a part orange, banana, two rolls and half a large slice of bread. Plus a boiled egg and coffee. You get your own cups from the cupboard. There's a toaster oven for the bread. Quirky!
The two young ladies running reception, Kookie and I have forgotten the other one, were lovely, helpful in every way.
All in all we had a lovely stay enjoying what I imagine is a more typical Japanese inn (minshuku?). Had we stayed in the smaller room I think the rating would have been lower.

Room Tip: The two larger rooms on the ground floor are excellent. The other one we saw was adequate but not e...

Very comfortable hotel with a lovely relaxing room where you can read one of the books available in the shelves or just watch TV. The rooms are in Japanese style good size and very clean. If you intend to go during the Summer/Autumn Festival be prepared to pay double price, but it really worthwhile

Writing this from the room... using the free wifi. They know what travelers need: spacious clean room, free wifi, laundry area, kitchenette, bikes for rental etc... To top it off, Mr. Akio Eguro was most friendly and helpful with recommendations and directions. Too bad temperature dipped when we arrived and was a tat too cold to use the bikes. Definitely enjoyed our stay.

We visited Takayama second, after staying at Ryokan Sawanoya in Tokyo - that might have colored our review, since Sawanoya is such a classy establishment for this price range. Rickshaw Inn was not quite as appealing, but it was very decent and the staff was very friendly. They upgraded us to a room with a private bath because they had extra availability, and they helped give us directions to some restaurants we wanted to try. The common area was very pleasant and inviting, and we used the small communal kitchen to make light breakfasts for ourselves, which worked really well. The room was a little sparten and had a bit of a musty smell, but the nice decorative touches in the common areas made up for it.

My family and I travelled to Takayama , a lovely small town in Japan on 19 December,2012. We stayed in Rickshaw Inn for 3 nights . We booked a Japanese room with attached bathroom for 3 people;the room was clean and spacious as we ( 2 adults and 2 kids ) could sleep comfortably.

We love Takayama , we love Rickshaw Inn and we love the staff especially, Kookie . She is very helpful and friendly . Keep up the great work!
The location of Rickshaw Inn was great . It was within walking distance ( less than 10 minutes walking )toTakayama Station, eatery , local attractions like the morning market and old private house .

This is a must stay hotel if traveller choose to visit Takayama.

Me and my partner stayed 3 nights in the Rickshaw Inn and found the staff incredibly friendly and helpful with their recommendations on restaurants and bars nearby. It was really useful to have a laundry room in the accommodation after a week travelling round Japan. Rickshaw is well located to the main streets of Takayama and less then 10 minutes walk from the train station. Our room was 'western style' and was clean and comfortable. Free wifi was also available. Would definitely stay there again if i come back to Takayama.
