“Interesting museum”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 4, 2014

A large space (viewed from 2 levels) showing 4 of the numerous huge floats used in the past during festivals. Photos & videos of the actual processions when the floats were pulled/carried were interesting

“Don't miss these floats”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 31, 2014

These marvelous floats are uniquely Japanese--I think. Maybe they something like them in other Asian countries, but the elaborate decorations and the craftsmanship are amazing. We were lucky to see a float in a parade in Tokyo--we wouldn't have known to appreciate it in the same way if we hadn't visited the museum.

“Magnificent Floats”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 28, 2014

The Float Exhibition Hall in Takayama displays in rotation the amazingly complicated 17th century carved floats used in Spring and Autumn festivals. Upon entering the museum, we were greeted warmly and given a tape in English to guide us around the four floats displayed behind a glass wall. It was very interesting to examine the minute details carved into the wood without being rushed. Photos are allowed When visiting the town of Takayama, be sure to go into this museum.

“Mechanical marvels”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 20, 2014

At the far north end of the old town, just beyond a huge torii gate. The museum is a bit expensive at 820Y. There are about six really tall festival floats which you view through a surrounding corridor. A video shows them in action, parading around the streets of Takayama twice a year - in Mid April and early October. Some are animatronic marvels with puppets that do acrobatics. There is a free audio tour on an antiquated tape recorder. Make sure you check out the models of Nikko's temples in the adjoining building.

“those wagons are MASSIVE”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 19, 2014

The festival floats are nothing that I imagined when I saw pictures of them. Getting to see them up close was amazing and to think that the era that produced them had little or no modern technology. It is simply breath-taking.
