Owner description: Four remarkable 17th century floats occupy this museum celebrating Takayama’s famous Autumn Festival.

This exhibition is really unique. It not big in size a such, but set-up in such way, that it in a fairly short time frame nicely displays the Japanese history of Festival Floats.
A guide give you a tour around the hall, where the Festival Floats are exhibited. That works well. It is difficult both to listen to the guide telling about the individual floats and the development of these over time as well as enjoying the extreme beauty of these, who both took many resources to build as well as to carry around.
There was not so many people there - I think that was a mistake. This is a must see if you visit Takayama for 24 hours or more!
Note the entrance ticket also covers the Sakurayama Nikkodan exhibition next door.

Really impressive floats (four) on display. Good film shows what You miss if not visiting just on peak days of festivals. Really cheap fee. Definitely place to see in Takayama.

Admittedly an impressive display of floats with histories going back hundreds of years, but the entrance fee was much higher than other float exhibitions I've been to. I felt like they were skimming from tourists to pay for the fancy building. The 1/10th model of Iesu Tokagawa's tomb/shrine was OK but I've actually been there so it meant little to me. My 14 and 17 year-olds were pretty much bored the whole time.

one of the most famous festival in japan held in april & october.
huge floats with mechanic dolls on top, flute & drum music, procession on streets and street food stalls around. can you ask more, for a real insight of japan traditional culture?
