“Fun Mix of Western and Japanese Styles”
Reviewed April 5, 2012

Of course since this is a Best Western, it had a few of the characteristics of a US hotel - large open lobby, giant breakfast buffet, and large (by Japan standards) Western Style rooms with beds. We were a family of 4, so they gave us a triple and we just kinda shared the beds between the parents and the 2 kids (9 & 5). As a guest you have access to a nice spa area (not an onsen, but a regular spa with 3x hot-tubs and a steam sauna) that's divided by sex - you do the typical onsen-style bath-before-you-get-in thing in the showers provided. Breakfast buffet was funny, because about 80% of the guests are Japanese and this was my first chance to see them feasting on an all-you-can-eat buffet...and they chowed down just like we Americans. The buffet included coffee, tea, rice, miso, grilled salmon, spaghetti (!), eggs, croissants, cold cereal, yogurt, juices, muffins...it was a good mix of East/West menu items.
Front desk's English was a bit lacking, but they were helpful. As far as the heating, it was easy to adjust the fan on or off, and open the windows a bit if we got too hot. It was snowing while we were there so the heat felt good!
Also very short walk from train station...just walk straight down the street that heads directly to the station...one block away is all.

Room Tip: They will sleep a family of four in a "triple" no worries.

The hotel is about two minutes walk from Takayama Station.
Room was nice. Hotel has spa rooms for men and women which are free for guests. The mens one has a pine scented mist sauna and three individual spa type baths.
The womens spa has , I believe, a different fragrance. Hotel may possibly change the fragrance each month.
The hotel restaurant is not cheap but on a par with other hotel restaurants price wise.
Did not eat here as ther are plenty of small ( and nice) restaurants nearby.
For breakfast we purchased (as we usually do) onigiri from a general convenience store opposite the rail station.
Unfortunately the hotel does not have a coin laundry.

Our family of five stayed here for two nights. It is near the train station and everything is an easy walk in Takayama. The rooms were what you should expect in Japan: smallish, very clean, and somewaht pricey. Beds were comfortable, the showers were good, and the staff were exceiptionally helpful. the connecting rooms were convenient for us.
The breakfast was included and provided a variety of western and Japanese options.
The tourist information at the train station provided very good maps and information.

Small room (Hollywood twin) for two people. Bathroom also small. The website pictures gave a different impression of the size of the room. Room was hot, temperature is controlled by hotel though there was an in-room control which only allowed you to adjust volume of air flow. Modern appearance, seemed to have been recently refurbished. Clean. Apart from size and room temperature, the only negative was the very weak wall mounted hairdryer. Hotel staff were very pleasant and helpful. We used the luggage forwarding service throughout Japan and it always worked excellently, as it did here also. The hotel’s buffet breakfast had a very wide choice of Japanese and Western items, including local specialities. The location is terrific, close to the station and an easy walk to all the sights of lovely Takayama. Apart from breakfast we did not eat in the hotel. We might have tried their restaurants but no menus were displayed or available on request, so it was difficult to work out what was available. They did not have much ambience, either. There are many enticing choices of restaurant in the town, specialising in delicious Hida beef, and quite a number are French-style. We enjoyed a delicious prix fixe meal at Bistro Mieux, which was quite expensive.
The local tourist information office near the train station is very helpful with maps and touring advice, and across from the station you can hire a car from the Toyota dealer. We tried to hire one from Australia without any success, but it was easy once in Takayama, and definitely a great way to get to our next stop at Shirakawago.

The Best Western isn't exactly the most exciting hotel choice but for a couple of nights in Takayama it was clean, not too cramped, good value and nice and close to the station. There's an Onsen on level 2 which was a nice touch after a long day's walking around the sights. The "air con" was set to "hot" centrally when we were there - the room was stinking hot when I got in. Reception said we should open the window to cool it down, which worked eventually. We tried the breakfast once and wouldn't recommend it - overpriced and underwhelming. The dinner displays are hilarious - they put out food to entice people in and..well, no-one dines there as a result!

Over-priced for a Best Western, but then I guess it is Japan. It's very close to the train station (but it's not a bad area) which is probably the best thing to say about this place. It's convenient, but you could be staying anywhere in the World as there's no Japanese character to the place/no atmosphere. Average breakfast.

I stayed here one night in October. The hotel appears to be recently renovated and is good value not to mention very conveniently located. The rooms are spacious by Japanese and many Asian standards for this level of hotel. The breakfast buffet had a very good selection of Japanese and Western options.
