Guesthouse Tomaru is a nice convenient place to stay in Takayama. I stayed 4 nights here and payed extra for the private room. The room was neat and tidy, and will offer you a Japanese experience with tatami floors. There are a list of things that make this place a high consideration for somewhere to stay in Takayama! Please read on:
- only a very short walk to the train and bus station!
- a coin laundry is very close by. Please note I highly recommend the top loader washing machine followed by the large dryer. Avoid the front loader because it takes too long and more expensive! You can change your notes in the drink machine outside the laundry!
- only a 30 second walk to a Family Mart convenience store.
- there is free tea and coffe, plenty of cooking utensils!
- lockers are provided for extra security
- many coffie shops and places to eat nearby
- heaters provided in the room
- a good place to meet new friends

How ever the best thing about this place is that Shingo and Madoka are very kind and genuinely interested in their guests! It showed in the way they spoke with people :) their English was great and actually a relief for any traveller who might be struggling with the Japanese language. You won't get this sort of attention at a hotel. Shingo was a great help with small things such as help with bus or train time tables and advice on local places to eat etc. There is a convenient little map in the dinning area that highlights what is of use nearby to the guesthouse such as coin laundry, caffe's etc. These things are based on my own personal experience. I was lucky enough to be there on the first Monday night of the month to enjoy a monthly dinner with some of Shingo and Madoka's local friends and neighbours who all spoke great English! It was a very nice experience! All you need to do is provide a dish and bring your own drinks. So if your looking at staying in Takayama, you can enjoy this place. Get up early and make use of the great bus service that Takayama provides to explore the surrounding areas, have a big day out then relax back at Guesthouse Tomaru :)

If you find a place to stay inTakayama, I really recommend Tomaru guesthouse. It's really a homey place ever although we stayed only 1 night. Shingo and Madoka are really nice and helpful. I felt like staying in a friend's house because of their hospitality. The place provides you with a warm and friendly atmosphere. I and my friends were so impressed and will definitely choose this place again if we come back to Takayama.

Good value, lovely owners with excellent English. Introduced us to single travellers, would be great way to meet others. Very comfortable room, very comfortable bedding. Highly reccomend to anyone wanting budget accommodation with friendly staff. We didnot get there until 9pm due to delayed train and the owners waited for us to arrive.

it is sad that I just spend 1 night in this guest house, Shingo and Madoka is very friendly and casual, they are very helpful and good in english so there is no difficulties in asking the best recommended place in takayama, for 2500 yen dorm room, the place is clean and comfortable, the dorm is nice, I even get a new friends here, the place is quite tiny from the outside but cozy in the inside :)
and the last thing, the location is just perfect, only 2 min from the bus and train station, and it's not noisy at all

The couple who own and run Tomaru are perhaps the nicest, most hospitable people you could meet on your travels. They are happy, friendly and very helpful when helping you plan your stay (including great eating out tips!); and their eight-month old is just beautiful! The guesthouse itself is very clean, well maintained and has a relaxing common area if you need some time out. Just a couple of minutes walk from Takayama Station.
