With only two nights in Takayama, the first of which was spent at our favourite restaurant, Ebi Hachi, my partner and I had a yen to try something different, preferably with a bit of beef. Unfortunately most of the Hida beef restaurants were too expensive.for our modest budget We were lured into Tenaga Ashinaga by the very reasonable prices and the wide range of dishes. This was Japanese home style cooking at its most inventive and on offer were gizzards, hamburger mince and stews featuring various other cheap cuts of meat. As any meat lover knows, the cheaper cuts when properly cooked are sometimes the tastiest. The other attraction at this friendly eatery was the owner's offer of two free ice creams or two free glasses of wine or beer to couples choosing to dine there for the first time. I opted for the beer - an excellent local draught - and my partner chose the wine which she said was fine. It's nothing fancy but it's tasty, filling and cheap. Her stew, with five side dishes was Y1600. My hamburger with Locomoco rice and two side dishes was about the same. The owner is a friendly guy who took our photo, then made two copies - one for us and the other for the large notice board outside his jolly restaurant.
