Nice located a few block from the station with friendly helpful staff. Stayed here two times and tries both the japanese styled room and normal beds. Both greats! Ask the staff about good restaurants nearby - there's one really good at the station - teppanyaki style.

Great, great value! Comfortable and clean facility and very friendly staff who want to help you in your travels. The showers could probably feel a bit more comfy but overall the facilities are sufficient and at about US$26, who can beat this price for the quality. I recommend it!

Clean and airy this place gives you a good "montainfeeling". You are well received, in Japanese or English, by a person who are eager to make you discover the region (the food is delicious and the onsen = hot bath just have to be experienced). I only regret staying for just one night!

Five minutes walk from the bus/train station. Twenty five minutes walk to Hida village and five minutes to sights in town.
Well equiped kitchen.
Small rather dark room with showers on the other floor.
Good Internet.

All the pros of the other J-Hoppers (well, the Osaka one at least) - inexpensive, clean, modern, lovely staff who will go the extra mile as a matter of course. Very close to the station, and a particularly nice feel to the place - quieter than the Osaka one and a more chilled, rural feel.
2500 yen or thereabouts and all the facilities you could want.

We stayed there for 3 nights.
It has it all - a good kitchen, super friendly staff who speak fluent English, comfy, spacious rooms (we took the double private room with shared bathroom) and style.

You got two computers in the 'lobby' and many rental options - from umbrellas, to shoes and much more. We got a coupon for a discounted trip to Shirakawa-Go as well, defiantly worth it.

Also, if you stay 3 nights or more you can to choose a "prize" - post cards, bicycle rental for a day, and two more things which I forgot.

We met there many nice people who joined us hiking in Takayama.

To sum things up - worth the value, would defiantly go back there again.

Affordable and comfortable lodging while you explore Takayama. My partner and I spent a fun few hours watching the sumo wrestling tournament on TV in the lounge area with staff members stopping by occasionally to check on the match results. :)

Perks: Spacious Japanese-style futon twin room with tatami mat floors as well as dorms (did not stay in dorms so can't speak to their quality), convenient location near the train station, knowledgable staff (some born and raised in the region), working kitchen, hot showers, AC, can hold luggage before or after check in

Cons: lots of floors to climb!, no secure luggage storage

J-Hoppers advantage: 1) Linked with system of other J-Hopper hostels throughout country to give discounts for those staying in multiple cities. This also means the staff is aware of travelers' habits, patterns and needs because of this connection with other hostels. 2) Sense of community (I love looking at the photos of past guests' adventures on the wall) with hostel dinners and events occasionally. 3) Great resources in staff recommendations and advice as well as maps for your specific needs (e.g. Food/restaurants nearby maps, sightseeing maps, etc.)

Bonus: The nearby curry place, Jacksons, is amazing. No English menu though but not too many options to pick from and they're all winners :)

If you want to save money on lodging to spend it at the morning markets, this is your place.

Room Tip: If you have heavy luggage...try to get a room closer to ground level or get in shape on the stairs!
