This hotel is near the train station and does look like a western hotel from the outside, but do not let this fool you. After staying in traditional Japanese accommodations prior to Takayama, we were very surprised as to the setup in this hotel. On entering the hotel, the foyer area is tiled, but to get to your rooms you have to remove your shoes and place then in lockers by the check in desk. Every thing past the foyer is covered in Tatami mats, even the stair cases. The room was very clean and had, what I would call, twin beds in the room on the floor, and a double sofa. The bath room was clean, but only had a shower. You are provided with Samue to wear around the hotel, even for dinner and breakfast
The highlight of this particular Ryokan are the baths. The baths are on the top floor. There is a public bath for both sexes, and the hot pool is actually outside and you get a great view of the city, especially at night. For these who are more modest there are 3 private baths. Each is a different style, and some do not have the bath outside.
Breakfast is a buffet, so you can chose between Japanese and Western dishes.
On entering the hotel you will notice across the driveway a small structure and maybe some people sitting down. There is a pool here where you can soak your weary feet.

This ryokan style hotel is very close to the station along a busy road. You have to take off your shoes when you enter the hotel and leave them in a locker. The floors are made of tatami and you can wear the funny socks provided in your room.

The room was bigger then we’re used to have in Japan. There is a shower but you can better go upstairs: The rooftop onsen is great.
You sleep on a matress on the floor, Japanese style.

Breakfast is Japanse buffet style too. You can get some cereals, bread and fruits if you don’t want to eat rice, fish and seaweed. If you want to catch an early train be aware that it can be busy and you might have to wait 10 to 15 minutes before being seated for your breakfast.

Staff is very friendly and very helpfull. Some speak English but not all.

I stayed at Takayama Ouan for two nights while traveling through Japan in Septemeber. The hotel is located close to the train and bus stations by the railroad tracks and a parking lot. It was definitely not a very posh location, but, as always in Japan, it felt completely safe. Takayama is quiet small town, so the center of the town was within easy walking distance. It is probably the tallest building in town with an attached automated parking tower.

I haven't stayed at traditional Japanese inns, but this hotel was probably the closest to their atmosphere, while giving you all the comforts of a tourist hotel. All the floors were tatami, so you are asked to leave the shoes in a locker by the reception. The room had low furniture and the mattress right on the floor. It was perfectly clean, well maintained and stylish. There was free wired internet that worked well. I did not have dinner in the restaurant, since it was expensive and required reservations, but the breakfast was great. The most interesting part were the hot baths on the roof!

I really enjoyed my stay and would stay there again.

This hotel is in a great location, but mostly the decor is awesome- it feels a little like a ryokan with all Japanese decor, taking off your shoes at the entrance, the rooms - absolutely gorgeous, but there are beds (lower than average but VERY comfy!)- the breakfast has more Japanese options but is very very rich and its an absolute favorite of mine!

Room Tip: try to take rooms facing the city, not the railway tracks

I really enjoyed staying in Takayama Ouan. They have great rooftop onsen with great view of Takayama. For those who want to experience Japanese onsen but not daring enough to go public, they have 3 private onsen as well. The other thing that I really enjoyed is the breakfast. The breakfast buffet have many selection of western and Japanese breakfast. They also provide free ramen after 10.30pm for supper.

Takayama Ouan is conveniently located; turn right out of the train station, walk until you see a very tall building on your right and you're there. In the hotel you take off your shoes and walk around the tatami floored corridors bare-foot which I found quite fun, but even more novel are the rooftop onsen. I've never been to an onsen before, and it's like having this huge hot bath which you don't have to wait to fill up. Which you have naked. With lots of other naked people. Once you get over the nakedness it's actually pretty relaxing. There are separate male and female public onsen and three private onsen which you can use for 30mins at a time. Free ramen is also served from 10.30 to 11.30pm.

The rooms are clean and functional with small bathrooms. My view was of the temple, but also of the train tracks which I could hear from time to time, but didn't really bother me. The staff are very friendly but did make a couple of mistakes, messing up our massage bookings twice. On a side note, the hotel can get really busy so do book in with the massage spa (2nd floor) in advance if you want to have a treatment. On our second day we had to wait a bit before we were let into the restaurant for breakfast.

So on the whole a friendly and novel experience and you can do a day trip to Shirakawa-go quite easily. There's not a massive amount to do in Takayama itself though, so enjoy the onsen, but you probably only need to stay for a day or two.
