This is such a well thoughtful hotel in potentially every way!
The interesting thing is guests are required to take off shoes and store shoes in locker provided. This is rare in this big scale hotels in Japan. But when you get used to it, it feels not annoying at all. This process makes the guest a easier access to every where in hotel, and the whole hotel could maintain a super clean condition.
Hotel provides rooms of both japanese style, western style and half-half style :). hehe, good design to apply to difference customer needs. Room is relatively big! very nice toilet and shower room seperately! And the room has air cleaner and humidifer. That's very thoughtful, i found it very necessary for the room under air-conditioner all the time in whole winter.
Breakfast here is the best ever buffet in japan hotel. 90% japanese food and 10% western, great variety, nice environment and service.
Hot spa(onsen) is located in top level of the building, giving your a nice overview of the whole city! 3 private spas is free for guest to rent. But there is no reservation process which means you get the spa by luck. The tip is to avoid the peak time, noon-3pm or dinner time would give you more chance. However, the public spa is not bad at all, it has nice view, well facilitation as well. And guest is free to access public spa as much as you want.
Another thoughful and hospitable move is that hotel offer free soup noodle during 22:30-23:30 for all the guests. Noodle is delicious, and the generousity is touching beyond a bowl of noodle!

Overall, this hotel plays an exemplary role to hospitality industry.

Room Tip: western style

My boyfriend and I found this place on Trip Advisor and are so glad we did! Beautiful roof top onsen, free late night noodles and the best breakfast I have ever seen at a hotel.
Clean, friendly, peaceful! Go there!!!

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights early Jan 2013 after staying at very standard western hotels throughout Japan eg Hyatt.

The experience was fantastic, totally different and an eye opener.

If you don't want a 'local' experience then this is not the hotel for you, however;
1/ the ENGLISH LANGUAGE SKILLS of staff were enough to get through,
2/ the JAPANESE BREAKFAST had enough 'comfort' western foods that you definitely won't starve!,
3/ the ONSEN experience with Japanese locals was an absolute treat,
4/ and the FUTON beds totally comfortable.

Downsides included:
1/. Even though the hotel is 3 min walk from train, not so central to main part of town (10m walk)
2/ wasn't cheap
3/ rooms could get very hot at night...

The staff couldn't do enough to help us and were extremely friendly.

If you feel like a splurge, I would HIGHLY recommend a treatment or two in the hotel spa - I had a half hour facial and half hour foot massage and it was heaven.

Great little izakaya (Japanese pub style) just around the cnr. From hotel. Out of hotel, turn left, see a fuel station on right (Eneos), turn at that street and right next to the fuel station with bamboo sticks out front is Origins (name nt in English out front). Most incredible miso soup and tempura platter that I've ever tasted. Worth trying...

Enjoy! ...but leave your western expectations in Tokyo!!

I am a bit surprised of what other reviewers have covered so fully about this hotel. So I am going to add only the details that have yet been mentioned so far.

Check-in time is strictly from 3pm under any circumstances. Of course you can leave your luggage at the counter before check-in time.

There are three private onsens for free. The middle one has the most style in my mind, has iregular shape of pool and can accommodate 2-4 people. The innerest one is the largest and claimed to be made of cypress. The most outer one is the smallest and is made of brick, the least attractive one.

Usually traditional Japanese hotel will have their staff to set up the bed during evening time, but that will be time consuming. And this hotel has the bed already, and so you need not to wait for the staff to set up the bed for you. And I have found the bed sheet is of very high quality.

Many travellers have mentioned that many restaurants closed at night but in fact there are at least 20-odd restaurants open every night. Most of them have irregular days off, mostly fall on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. And since these restaurants scattered around the little town, it is not easy to locate them. I suggest you ask the hotel staff for a guide before heading out for dinner. As far as I can remember, most restaurants are Japanese cuisine - Hida beef, teriyaki, (good draft beer), no Chinese or western cuisine. And most of them accept cash only even if you have spent thousands of dollars.

My plan includes breakfast and dinner. Breakfast is more of Japanese style and so prepared to see rice, miso, fried salmon instead of eggs and ham. Dinner is first served for 3-4 courses usually including the Hida beef followed by buffet with choices of tempura, desserts, etc.

Close to the station, English speaking staff, easy and recommended stay. Best part was the rooftop Onsen. Not so great part was the bed which my back was suffering after a not so great sleep. I will note my wife was ok so it's likely the bed thing is more me.

We stayed here one night with our tour group. We really enjoyed this hotel as we felt like we were immersed in the Japanese style accommodation. The moment we entered the lobby we removed our shoes and put them away in a shoe locker in the lobby. Our room had two futon mattress for sleeping and a robe jacket, pants, and socks for lounging. The rooftop onsen includes three private baths for couples (first-come, first-served) and the gender appropriate baths have both an inside and outside soaking pool. There were plenty of choices at the traditional Japanese breakfast buffet. Be sure to check out the foot bath right outside the front of the hotel....it's heaven.

We stayed here for 3 nights at the end of a 2 week trip around inner Japan. The location was just perfect, about 5 minutes short walk from the train station.

We have requested non-smoking room online but given smoking room without informing us. The whole night was a disaster because the smoke is all over the room, you can smell it on you mattress and pillow. Not to mention our clothes/hair/jackets etc. We got anohter a non smoking room next day.

The positive was we really enjoyed the rooftop onsen. We had a private onsen, with gorgeous view overlooking the town.

We loved Takayama. The town is very charming with great sight-seeing in the old neighborhood and good shopping and places for lunch. It really slows down after 6pm and most of the shops and restaurants close.

We had breakfast and set dinner in the hotel. They are okay as what you would expect from hotel.

I highly recommended this hotel to everyone, but will I stay this hotel? NO for sure, simply because I want to try other special lodge around next time.
