Really glad we stayed here. The best features of this hotel were:
-3 private onsens available - a really good option for westerners and onsen beginners
-traditional furnishing, tatami and futon
-AMAZING buffet breakfast, so much to choose from, special local dishes, things you will never see before or after this trip, delicious
-pajamas, robes, slippers and socks provided daily for use everywhere in the hotel
-location, right next to the train station, no need for taxi
-foot onsen out the front
-can walk to heaps of takayama attractions

The hotel has no signage (in English) to identify it as Takayama Ouan, but it is the tallest building in the area and has large Japanese writing down the building.
The staff were helpful upon check-in and spoke English, but for the rest of our stay there was no contact from the staff.

Arrived in Takayama by train. Quan is easy to walk to even with luggage. Hotel staff were friendly but not as helpful as we have experienced in other Japanese hotels. Room was small but adequate. We chose a twin room as that was a little larger then the double. The breakfast was wonderful in their restaurant. However, for dinner you have to prebook....no walk-ins even if they aren't full! We were turned away, rather rudely we thought at the time, by the restaurant manager. The onsens make up for any shortfalls though. The best onsens we experienced on our trip in Japan. The private onsens are fantastic with a comfortable tub and great views. Would stay again though I would see if they had any larger rooms and maybe prebook dinner.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor with views over mountains.

We stayed here after reading about this hotel on Trip Advisor. I concur with the thoughts that it is a delightful fusion of japanese & western influences, However, our room (10-15) was to small to accomodate us & our 2 medium size suitcases. We had to juggle the cases contstantly between the bed & floor. Even the floor area was to small to open our cases. Maybe we got a small room as this does not appear to be what other reviews have reported.

This hotel is an easy 5 minute walk from the station. Check in was quick. I had a twin room which was not large but not too small plenty of room for two people & luggage. Shoes are not worn in the hotel. Breakfast was included which was traditional Japanese food. Nightwear was provided which could be worn throughout the hotel. There are 3 private onsens as well as the public male/ female ones. Had no trouble accessing the private ones on the four occasions I used them. Massage was great & reasonably priced. Footbath at the entrance was great after a day of sightseeing. Staff spoke English & were friendly & helpful.

We are staying at the Takayama Ouan at the moment and just had the most amzing breakfast that we have ever had and we travel a lot. There were sixty different Japanese dishes to choose from in a beautiful buffet with tables of pastries, fruit, and vegetables to go with all the different meats, eggs, fish, tofu and other hot dishes. Truely a feast. The hotel itself is like a ryokan but with small western touches. We are the only non-Japanese staying here and everyone is so friendly. There are private and general onsen on the roof with views over the mountains. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: Ask for one high up away from the railway although the double glazing makes the room very quiet.

We booked a double room at this hotel through Agoda.com. This hotel is situated in a very convenient location; it is within walking distance of the rail station and several of the main attractions itself. We decided not to have breakfast included as we prefer to eat light in the morning. Plus, there are plenty of places within walking distance to get something to eat. However, the hotel did provide free noodles to their guests in their restaurant during the evenings for an hour starting at 10:45. It was a delicious and pleasant treat!

The entire hotel is lined with tatami mats to offer a taste of Japanese accommodation experience. So, you are asked to take off your shoes and place them in a locker by the reception desk. Several of the staff members spoke excellent English so it was fairly easy (and stress-free) to communicate. Our room itself was an okay size; very clean. In addition to the double bath, there was a nice loveseat and coffee table, offering a pleasant sitting area. If there had been no sitting area, then there would have been more free walking space within the room. But we did not mind too much. There is also free wired internet and a bar fridge. The hotel provides you with casual pyjamas, which you can wear within the building.

On the top floor of the hotel, there are three private onsens, in addition to the two public baths available for guests to use. The private baths are based on a first-come, first-served basis and guests are asked to limit their time to 30 minutes. We recommend using the onsens as you can get fantastic views of the city itself. We thoroughly enjoyed our bath experience. Outside of the hotel, there was a cold foot spa, which was nice to use after a long day of walking.

Our room overlooked the train tracks and I heard a train passing through as early as 5am. We are pretty solid sleepers so it did not bother us too much. However, if you are a light sleeper, then I recommend that you request a room on the other side of the building. We had forgotten to request a non-smoking room. Our room was apparently located on a smoking floor but far enough away from the designated smoking area. There was no hint of smoking throughout our stay at this hotel.

This is a wonderful hotel with all the best qualities of a Japanese-Western fusion. The decor is reminiscent of a fine Japanese inn, with the warmth and beauty that implies, with all the amenities of a good western hotel. Breakfast is great, buffet style with mostly Japanese but some basic continental breakfast items. The hot tubs on the top floor are great -- the private ones give you your own rooftop terrace experience. The space is spotless. The staff are welcoming and most speak English. There's a bit of a lack of English signage--which made using the washer and dryer (near the onsens) a bit challenging. As for location, it's minutes walk from the train station, which is perfect if you're hauling luggage. If you want something in the historic merchant area, this isn't it. Takayama is entirely walkable.
