A 2-stage cable car ride to the top. Not cheap - go only on a clear day. Views from the observatory is stunning.

We stayed nearby and took the Shinhotaka Ropeway up the mountain then hiked around the summit. Our 1 year old daughter loved the cable cars that made the ropeway so it was a great adventure for her.

There is a small restaurant at the top that serves noodles and a few other dishes that was OK (not spectacular, but we enjoyed it after a little hike) and of course a gift shop with Japanese cookies and other gifts.

The only downside to the Ropeway was that the days we were in the area it was rainy and foggy most of the time. There were a few breaks in the clouds which were spectacular.

If you go during fall foliage season, go early in the day as it can get very crowded especially on the weekends. You have to wait over an hour to get on the second gondola. Plan to eat lunch up on the second level as there are a lot of yummy options and a good distraction for the wait for the gondola wait.

We did this day trip from Takayama today (Aug 11, 2012) and it worked very well. The hike wasn't hard and we had a beautiful experience in the Japanese forest. We took the 9:40am bus from Takayama which let us off at the Shinhotaka Ropeway at 11:15am. We bought this bus pass that costs 4000 yen per person but covered our bus fare in most of the region for two days (there are many people who do overnight hikes as well). The Shinhotaka Ropeway costs 1500 yen per person and took us to the start of the hike. There are signs that are posted indicating that only experienced hikers should proceed further but the hike we did was not difficult at all because from the top of the gondola it is mostly all down hill. From the top of the gondola we hiked 2km to Nishiho Sanso. This was a slight uphill climb, but there were lots of even and downhill parts too. There were tons of people on this part of the hike and it took us a little less than an hour. From this point we had a little lunch and hiked down 4km to Kamikochi. The trail is well marked but a very steep down hill. It took us about 2 hours to get to the bus station in Kamikochi. I would double the time if doing it in the other direction but I have read it can be done in 3 hours. The bus from Kamikochi runs every half hour this time of year and costs 1530 yen (this part of the bus trip is not covered by the pass that we bought) and dropped us off at Hirayu spa (Onsen). From Hirayu Onsen we were back on the pass that we bought and this returned us to Takayama.
The weather was really nice this time of year. I brought a long sleeve shirt and wore it for a little while before I was too hot. It was cloudy out and there were a few drops of rain, but nothing that would deter us. In total it was an all day trip and we were back at the bus station at 5:40pm.
