The staff are not only courteous and attentive, they are rightly proud of their traditions. From the moment you enter the ryokan and hear the welcoming drum you know that they want you to get the most out of your stay. The room was spacious and clean and we had a balcony with a great view of the river. The meal served in the room by the loveliest lady was delicious. Our Western knees suffered a little but the food was worth it.
At bedtime another couple of friendly ladies rolled out our futons and wished us good night. We both have back problems but slept well the first night. The second night wasn’t so good but then we are not great sleepers normally.
Breakfast was nice. We opted for the healthy version as we didn’t feel up to pickles at that time in the morning. You have to ask for butter and jam for your bread. The coffee isn’t the best but you can always hop round to Coffee Don after breakfast.
We opted for the ‘Hida beef’ meal in their sister hotel on the second night. This was a mistake as it was a western style steak. Perfectly good but we were here to eat Japanese style.
Overall a wonderful experience and we would recommend it highly.More
