“Clean, modern, tiny rooms, but worthwhile with the onsen”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 24, 2010

Modern hotel with clean rooms that are just exceptionally small. However, the friendly staff, nice breakfast and the onsen made up for that. The rooftop onsen is certainly worth a stop if you are looking for that experience.

Beautiful beds though the rooms are a bit small. Suggest get the twin share rooms as the double bedded rooms looked pretty small. Lovely and clean and modern, typical small Japanese bathroom. The roof top spa/onsen is tremendous overlooking the town. Great position, only a 5 minute walk to the station and lots of restaurants to choose from for dinner. The morning breakfast in the hall was included in the tariff, great breakfast and croissants.

We really enjoyed our 3 night stay at the Alpina Hotel. Everything was new and clean. It's a 2 minute walk from the train station and walkable to everywhere else in Takayama city. The onsen upstairs was just perfect, never overcrowded. The most people I saw in there were 4 -5 others. At other times I had the whole place to myself. Loved the outside tub. Just a warning, restaurants close early (it's hard to find a meal at 9pm at night). But there is always the 7/11 type store near the station (called Daily Yamakaza or something like that) where you can get rice balls and instant noodles. It's a shame that their computer system in the lobby is only in Japanese (it's a system to find good restaurants).

Our group booked three rooms, a single, double and twin. The hotel is a few blocks in one direction from the station and in the other direction from the old part of Takayama. The rooms were small which I guess you expect in Japan. The twin room is bigger and more expensive than the double, even though two people occupy each room. The single room was the same as the double room in size and features, but much cheaper since only one person is using it. I thought the hotel was generally over priced. I liked the cleanliness and the cable internet. I disliked the the blandness and the value. The car parking cost 500y per day (cheap) and if the spaces next to the hotel filled up they had an overflow car park nearby. The location wasn't anything special, but Takayama is so small you could walk to anywhere you wanted to be so it was not a problem.

We've been to many, many business hotels all over Japan that aren't half as nice for triple the money. If you are looking for old-world rustic charm this place isn't it- stay at a ryokan. If you are looking for convenience, value and comfort, this is your place. Everything is clean and soothingly decorated. Staff are friendly and obliging, particularly if you speak Japanese. They recommended restaurants, gave us directions, printed out coupons, and looked up train times for us. Room size is no different from nearly any other hotel in Japan. Add to this a stellar onsen (English directions included for newbies!) and spa and massage treatments in your room (for a fee, of course) and you have one great experience. Next time we'll stay in Takayama for two nights- first night at a ryokan, second night here.

we only spent one night there. the hotel is decent. it was recently built, is clean etc but lacks a little charm. I didnt go to the spa but was told it was nice. It's relatively inexpensive.

This hotel was modern and clean, a ten minute walk from train station. The spa bath is nice with a nice view. Serive left something to be desired. "free internet`` required the rental of a laptop for 1000 Yen. Breakfast was not great and we were told to leave our table at 9:30 so they could ``close the doors``. Other than generally feeling less welcoming than most otehr Japanese accomodations it was an ok stay.
