This hotel is located an easy 3-4 minute walk from the train station. The staff are friendly and accommodating. The rooms are comfortable and cosy. I found the bed to be a bit on the hard side but it is like that all over Japan. The bathroom had a real caravan feel to it with a step down to the toilet and a small but deep combination shower/bath.
On the top floor there is hot pools. Men and women are seperate and you are not allowed to wear any clothes. This was a bit of an eye opener but something new to experience

I really liked this hotel, great location, close to attractions, train station, and restaurants. Staff was so friendly. Room was clean and a good size. I would definitely recommend this place and I would stay here again.

Hotel was very close to station - easy walk. There is a 7/11 convenience store located in back across street from hotel. We were on a higher floor with beautiful views of the mountains off in the distance. Room was attractive and slightly larger than some rooms we had at other hotels but there was a surprising lack of power outlets. Spa was very large and nice. Breakfast was good although we did have to wait one day as dining room is not that large. Beautiful small town to walk around, restaurants and scenery was fun to explore. Good Italian restaurant within walking distance - Bistro Kanzo. Husband/Wife team - very friendly and good food.
Bathroom was tiny; when showering my head was bumping ceiling. Room was very hot - a/c was not on 'cool' yet so they brought us a key to open window - which helped a lot.
I had booked and paid for a waterfall tour in the area - which company ultimately cancelled. Tried to book another tour for following day but they couldn't because they needed two days notice (?). Tour people suggested we go to Gero and presented a map that showed waterfalls, cherry blossoms, etc. so we thought we'd give that a try. Got to Gero on the train to find their tourism folks who said no you can't walk to waterfalls, needed to take a taxi $$ then arrange for it to come back....etc. long confusing sounded impossible to accomplish so we ended up going back to Takayama. No major problem as we used the JR pass but sort of a waste of time.

Room tip: On the mountain side view.

Before staying the night at Wonsato we first stopped in Takayama-Shi for one night. During our planning phase months ago we picked the spa hotel Alpina because it was within easy walking distance at only 2.5 blocks from the train and bus terminals. Turned out Alpina was just right for our “lay-over”. Located close to most everything it was great to venture out after our arrival around 3pm. Quick note; we began to look for a dinner place for 5 of us starting at 5pm (most places open at 6pm) and got turned away from several places as they required reservations. We finally squeezed in at the “butchers” where the owner accommodated us with the promise to be out by 7. We left at 6:50. He and his staff were very nice. All in all Hotel Alpina was just perfect. The hotel staff is so friendly and accommodating in every way. Rooms are typical small Japanese style so don’t expect lots of room. The Onsen on the 9th floor is great as it’s both in doors and outside over looking the town. It was my first traditional Onsen so wasn’t sure what to expect but it was awesome. They give you instructions on what to do and not to do. You wear your pajamas provided in the room with the provided slippers. You take a towel from your room and head up to the 9th floor. There are showers that you wash off before entering the bath and then can also use after the bath to wash up with soap. They provide razors and hair brushes as well as qtips. It is really nice.

Easy to find, just a short walk from the railway station, Efficient and welcoming reception
A very modern though small room, though highly functional . It had everything you need. There was a pillow menu if you wanted to change, and pyjamas and slippers supplied.
Good free wifi and a microwave down the hall.
I would use this again.
