“Great value!”
Reviewed March 9, 2010

This was our second trip to Takayama. The first time we went we stayed at a lovely high-end ryokan, as it was for a birthday! But this time we wanted to do it more on a budget! As an area, Takayama can be very expensive, so we were very happy when we found Hotel Hana.

It is in the centre of Takayama, but it's a little tricky to find, and we got a little lost at first! (The same thing happened to us last time we visited too! Small Japanese streets can be difficult to navigate!)

The room was very clean, comfortable, and a decent size considering the price! However, if you have a lot of luggage, it may be a bit tight. (We only had backpacks so no problem!) The staff were friendly and helpful. The spoke a little English, but they're not fluent, so go slow if you don't speak Japanese!

The buffet style breakfast was a good set-up for the day, which for us involved a lot of walking!

The only problem we had was that the area for eating breakfast was rather cold. However, this was because a very large tour group was preparing to leave, and so the automatic entrance doors were almost continuously open, letting in the cold air. I think we were just unlucky with the timing there!

If you're only planning a short stay (one or two nights) and don't want to spend too much money in a rather pricey area, then this is the hotel for you!

I stayed here for 1 night during a 3 week long motorcycle adventure. The room was the japanese business room standard. A reasonably sized bed, a small desk and a private bathroom made my stay comfortable. My room had an amazing view of the city. internet was only available in the lobby and was not wireless, still kind of normal for Japan. The staff recommended Yamatake-Shoten for dinner. I had the best steak I've ever had in any country. Not much night life in Takayama, but that's the point isn't it?

We arrived at Takayama rail station about noon without a room booking anywhere in town. The Tourist Information office opposite the station exit were extremely helpful and phoned a few places we had read about before mentioning Hotel Hana as a mid-range hotel offering doubles for Y10,000 - a quick call confirmed a booking and check-in at 3pm.

The hotel is an easy 8min walk from the station on the road into town and the town centre was a further 8min walk further on. The hotel is found right next door to the pretty Hida Kokubun-ji temple / pagoda.

The reception staff were friendly and when asked about an internet connection they said that a connection is available in the lobby to plug my own PC into or they had a laptop to lend out. I used this with my own laptop in the evening without any problems.

The double room and bathroom was a good sized room by Japan standards and was clean and comfortable. The bath could actually function as a bath without feeling too squashed in it. The bed was a little hard for my liking but still slept well and good curtains to keep out the light. I would imagine a room on the south side of the building on level 3 would have a good view over looking the pagoda, ours was near reception (L2) but only looked out onto the driveway. The flat screen TV in the room only appeared to have Japanese channels.

The buffet style breakfast included was very much Japanese foods, with a small selection of bread and lots of rice / veg / noodle dishes. Although not all to my taste - toasted bread and jam was enough.

Takayama is a quiet pleasant town in the highlands and was beutiful in the autumn leaves. I recommend trying the cook yourself local Hila Beef at the town restaurants, this has similar fatty marbling to Kobe beef but at much less cost. Another to try is the "Hoba Miso" (think that is right) straw mushrooms ect mixed in miso paste cooked on a large leaf; again on the table top charcoal fired pots you cook the Hilda Beef with. A great evening was had sitting on the floor cooking, eating and drinking local sake.

  • Liked — Affordable good location, spacious room
  • Disliked — No in room internet but lobby connect was OK
