Not far from the JR station, it is a good place to base yourself in Takayama. The breakfast is adequate and the staff were helpful, despite limited English. Our room was 'Japanese style' and on the smallish side but it fit myself, husband and 10 year old ok. I liked that you could open a window. We borrowed bikes from the hotel and toured around Takayama one afternoon, which was lovely. It's close to restaurants, cafes and the tourist sites.

We very much enjoyed our stay at Hotel Hana. Good basic accommodations at at a good price.

Hotel Hana is located within walking distance of the train station and the MANY shops in the Takayama area. There are so many different places to eat and shop, it takes a while to find your favorites. We were there at Fall Festival time so saw a special side of Takayama's customs and history.

After being there for 3 days, we found that there is a restaurant within the Hotel Hana building. During the day it looks like a hallway door going nowhere special. During the evening, the door is open with a sign posted alongside (no English or pictures on the sign). One evening we heard some activity on the other side of the curtain so we peeked in. Nice surprise! We then stopped in each evening for some great finger foods and beer. All there were super nice (and seemed just as glad to see us as we were to be there). GREAT FIND!

Once again, good basic accommodations at at a good price. Our room was a small western style room and the breakfast was very basic (and the same each day). If you're looking for fancy, this is not for you but you'll enjoy Hotel Hana if you looking for good basic accommodations located close to Takayama central.

Super cheap and a big room. Takayama is tiny, so you can easily cover it on foot to wherever you want to see. The staff were great.

Unlike most hotels this one had huge windows you could fully open. It is such a relief to get some fresh air and enjoy the brilliant Takayama weather rather than trying to sleep with the hum of an aircon going.

Hana hotel stands next to a graveyard, in a dark street close to the center of Takayama. We did not like our room which we considered quite dirty. The fitted carpet had huge stains all over it that quite disgusted us. Also the bedspread and the sheets had stains, infact we asked to change them. Ok, the price was convenient but in other japanese towns for the same amount we got excellent rooms. Overall not at all a good choice. I do not recommend it!

We stayed in the Hotel Hana for 4 nights and were pleased with the choice. It's only about 10 minutes to walk from the bus/train station in Takayama and easy to find. The tourist information office just outside the train station has very helpful staff who speak very good English.
The hotel rooms are small - as they all are in Japan, with ensuite toilet, basin and traditional Japanese deep, short bathtub (Ofuro) for soaking after washing. It's equipped with a shower head, so you can use it as a shower as we did.
A bonus was the simple breakfast provided - bottomless coffee and tea, toast, butter and jam for westerners and a soup of the day with salad and noodles for Japanese tourists. There is no restaurant.
The staff didn't speak much English, but we were able to communicate with the limited Japanese we had. Air conditioning was a must due to the heat. We couldn't fathom the TV instructions but didn't care as we were worn out each day from sightseeing. At the time of writing, there was no internet connection in the rooms. The only internet connection is wireless and is located in the foyer. It was slow, but capable for emails - not for big downloads. A computer is available in the foyer for emails if you don't have your own.
The only negative with this hotel for us, as with others in Japan, is that smoking is allowed in the foyer from 10am and some floors are still 'smoking' floors. So when booking, make sure you ask for non-smoking floor. And don't hang around after 10am in the foyer!
Finally, the hotel owns a few bicycles for use of patrons so we had a very nice afternoon cruising around the non-tourist areas of Takayama and using them for carrying home our grocery shopping.

Definitely cheap for such a clean room.
And we got free breakfast as well.
The hotel is located several minutes walk from JR Takayama Station.

Note that there is a cemetery right beside the hotel.
So it might be better to ask for a room that doesn't face the cemetery.

This was our second trip to Takayama. The first time we went we stayed at a lovely high-end ryokan, as it was for a birthday! But this time we wanted to do it more on a budget! As an area, Takayama can be very expensive, so we were very happy when we found Hotel Hana.

It is in the centre of Takayama, but it's a little tricky to find, and we got a little lost at first! (The same thing happened to us last time we visited too! Small Japanese streets can be difficult to navigate!)

The room was very clean, comfortable, and a decent size considering the price! However, if you have a lot of luggage, it may be a bit tight. (We only had backpacks so no problem!) The staff were friendly and helpful. The spoke a little English, but they're not fluent, so go slow if you don't speak Japanese!

The buffet style breakfast was a good set-up for the day, which for us involved a lot of walking!

The only problem we had was that the area for eating breakfast was rather cold. However, this was because a very large tour group was preparing to leave, and so the automatic entrance doors were almost continuously open, letting in the cold air. I think we were just unlucky with the timing there!

If you're only planning a short stay (one or two nights) and don't want to spend too much money in a rather pricey area, then this is the hotel for you!
